Research shows that student cell phone use in school has a negative impact on academic performance and mental health. Without access to cell phones, students can focus on the present, the people around them, and their education. Ohio law now requires all schools to adopt a policy by July 1, 2025 that governs student cell phone use during school hours. Director Stephen Dackin praised this focus on the science of reading at today’s Northeast Ohio Literacy Summit hosted by City of Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb. Earlier this year, Governor Mike DeWine and Director Dackin met with Cleveland leaders to share the importance of the science of reading. Working to support student health and wellness! Expanding school-based healthcare is proven to significantly reduce barriers to accessing essential health services, leading to improved physical and mental health, and academic outcomes for students. The Health Center at Springfield High in the Springfield City School District will support both the physical and mental health needs of the district's students, parents, and the Springfield community. Earlier this week, Governor Mike DeWine and district leaders held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the center.
