Last week, we proudly commemorated our 50th anniversary, marking half a century of dedication to providing reliable and affordable electricity to rural and metro communities served by EMCs across Georgia. To honor this milestone, we created a special video in partnership with associates across our fleet, showcasing the timeline of our diverse generation portfolio. Thank you to our dedicated workforce, who work tirelessly around the clock to keep the lights on across Georgia. Here’s to the next 50 years of growth and energy excellence!

  • Fifty years ago today, on August 8, 1974, Oglethorpe Power was founded with a vision to provide reliable and affordable electricity to rural communities across Georgia. Today, serving our 38 member EMCs, we are one of the largest energy producers in Georgia and the largest generation cooperative in the United States.   Our skilled workforce has adapted and thrived through decades of economic shifts and technological advancements. Over the years, we have made significant strides in sustainability, community engagement and technological innovation. As we look to the next 50 years, our strategic generation investments, commitment to reliable and affordable electric service and dedication to a cleaner energy future will ensure that we are well-positioned to meet our member EMCs’ expanding and evolving energy needs.

  • Today, we announced the construction of two new natural gas projects in Georgia: a two-unit combined-cycle plant in Monroe County and a simple-cycle combustion turbine unit at an existing facility in Talbot County. Oglethorpe Power has owned and operated power plants in Monroe and Talbot Counties for many years, and we are excited to build upon our strong relationships in these communities. In addition to helping meet the state’s rising electricity demands, these projects will create permanent, high-quality jobs, hundreds of temporary construction jobs, increased local revenue during construction and ongoing tax revenue for schools and county operations. “Georgia is experiencing tremendous growth, thanks to our state’s favorable business climate, skilled workforce and sound leadership. The electric cooperatives we serve need more energy capacity to meet their increasing demand. These two new natural gas projects demonstrate growth in Oglethorpe Power’s generation portfolio and our focus on reliable, affordable and sustainable energy for our members.” - Mike Smith, Oglethorpe Power President & CEO Learn more at www.opc.com/newgeneration. • We recently hosted students from the Youth Leadership Polk Program for an interactive energy education event at the Sewell Creek Energy Facility. Oglethorpe Power sponsors Youth Leadership Polk, a Polk County Chamber of Commerce Program designed to encourage students to participate as leaders in their schools and to continue promoting and enhancing the quality of life for themselves and their communities. During the event, the students from Rockmart and Cedartown High Schools learned about electricity generation and toured the Sewell Creek facility, a natural gas-fired power plant operated by Oglethorpe Power. We are proud to support the Youth Leadership Polk Program and provide educational opportunities for the next generation of Polk County leaders.
