“Petaluma Gap, the gateway to the Sonoma Coast.” 🍷🌱 We are thrilled to start working with Keller Estate! Our associate director, Ella Winje, spent some time at the winery this past week, and we can’t wait to share more about this estate and its wines with you! 🚙 Deborah and Arturo Keller, the founders of Keller Estate, discovered this site while exploring the scenic roads of Sonoma in a vintage car (a love that is evident in the winery today!). The La Cruz Vineyard, first planted in 1989, has been nurtured by the family, who fully embraced this area. Ana Keller became the Estate Director in 1998 and played a pivotal role in recognizing the Petaluma Gap area as an AVA in 2017. 🐑 Over time, the winery has taken steps to replant its blocks, become sustainably certified, and incorporate organic and regenerative practices, including beekeeping, owl and bat boxes on site, and 200 sheep grazing the land. Wines are carefully crafted by winemaker Jacqueline Yoakum, producing Estate Expressions and Vineyard Designates from La Cruz and El Coro Vineyards from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. We were thrilled to show Artesa Vineyards & Winery at this year’s Pebble Beach Food & Wine! The event, which takes place at the gorgeous Pebble Beach Resorts, is hosted by the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, which provides grants to Monterey County youth-focused non-profits that support education and opportunities. Pouring and chatting with attendees were the winery’s Hospitality and PR Manager Marta Echávarri Abascal and David Tethal of Codorníu. Anyone who stopped by was able to indulge in some Ars Collecta Cava bubbly or Artesa’s Los Carneros Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. 🍷 Artesa Winery & Vineyards is the Codorníu Raventos Group’s expansion into the Napa wine scene. Located in Carneros, the winery is known for its small lots of high-quality wines, including the region's most well-known varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. We’re excited to have them in the fold! 🇪🇸 Our ODL team is hosting writers, speakers, and educators in Cava (@cava.do) this week! There is no better way to understand a region than to stand in the soil amongst the vineyards and meet the makers. With our fearless leader @kt_canfield, the first few days have already been informative and fun. 📝 Starting off with a masterclass David Furer MW (@davetheneighbor), we got the lay of the land with a grand tasting of producers, insight into its terroir and vineyards, and a primer on the new Cava de Guarda classifications. These new terms were enacted in 2020 by the DO. Cava de Guarda is characterized by nine months of aging, while the Cava de Guarda Superior designation requires 18 months of aging, and the grapes to be from specific vineyards and organically grown. Under this umbrella are also Reserva and Gran Reserva styles. 🚗 Then off to Vilafranca, Cava Country, for a few days with some of the fantastic producers that we work with. We can’t even begin to thank all of those who hosted us so far and those who presented us with incredible tastings and the inner workings of the vineyards and wineries so far! We even explored vineyard technology and visited Vallformosa, the first Spanish winery to be certified B-corp. Samantha is the US Senior Editor for Jancis Robinson and the maker of “Wine News in 5.” 🥂In the Russian River Valley, Samantha tasted her way through Emeritus’ premium wines, like the 2020 Hallberg Brut and the 2019 Pinot Hill Elite. We love allowing our visitors to experience the terroir and estate first-hand by touring the property with President Mari Jones and Winemaker Keith Hammond. 🍷Next, Samantha traveled to Quintessa on the eastern edge of Rutherford, in the heart of Napa.
