Hot take: If you are winning all your bids, you are playing it safe!

🌟 Tip Thursday 🌟 If you're winning every single RFP you're bidding on, you're doing it wrong. ...seems a bit counter-intuitive, right? Isn't winning good? 1. Win in your "core" market 🎯 You want to define your core market and win as many of those bids as possible. It's usually beneficial to limit yourself to a particular geography (e.g., California) or a type of service (e.g., housing development) to start, so you can concentrate your efforts in winning a slice of the market. 2. Keep an eye out for expansion opportunities 👀 Once you have a few wins under your belt, it's time to start expanding. You may want to bid on RFPs outside of your core geography, or add services to support more use cases. For example, it's common for marketing agencies to start offering web development capabilities because bigger bids would ask for both services. 3. What if my win rate goes down? 🙃 When you first start expanding, you likely won't win as often as you do in the core market. But that's okay! When you are expanding, it's more important to win something in a new category/geography, as opposed maintaining a certain win rate. TLDR - if you are winning all your bids, it means you are playing it safe.

🌟 Tip Thursday 🌟 When bidding on a government contract, you should pay close attention to the evaluation criteria to gauge your chance of winning. The evaluation criteria format differs a lot from state to state and city to city, so you have to put in some work 🙄. 1. Read through the evaluation criteria 🤓 What do they care the most about? Is it past experience? Is it your technical proposal? How much does price matter? Do they offer any incentives for local businesses or disadvantaged businesses? 2. Identify your relative strengths 💪 Do you have tons of experience in the particular project area? Do you have a killer team with special expertise? Can you be competitive in price? Make sure your strengths matches up to the evaluation criteria. For example, some RFPs already specify a budget and are not likely going to select a vendor just because they are competitive in price. 3. Ask questions when not clear ✋ Sometimes the evaluation criteria can be quite vague. It's totally fair game to follow-up with the procurement officer to ask how they weigh the different factors. Q&A session is a good vehicle to be surfacing these questions. 😫 But I don't have time to do all of this work! Super fair point! Instead of doing all this work, you can use Odo (YC S24) and get personalized RFPs that match your profile...for free 😎 Check us out here: https://www.odo.do/

Typos can cost millions of dollars... 🤯

It's crazy that a small typo can cost a business opportunity with the government... I was talking to a well-regarded web development agency yesterday. They had recently bid on a website development project for a city. Their 30-page proposal had one small typo on the accessibility standards (saying "WCAG 2.0" instead of "WCAG 2.1AA" in one of the responses). Despite having 20+ years of experience in the industry, having an impressive track record of previous clients... they were not chosen because of this one typo in their proposal 🤯 (legit, the government agency noted that as the reason for not moving forward). Isn't crazy that you can blow off a $1M contract because of a typo? What if there's a companion that can dot the i's and cross the t's for you? If you are getting PTSD from this anecdote, Odo (YC S24) is here to help! We help companies find and win government contracts. Check us out here: https://www.odo.do/

Odo (YC S24) helps businesses win more government contracts at a fraction of the cost. State and local governments buy $1.5T worth of products and services from businesses every year, ranging from consulting and construction to yes — cream cheese and bagels. However, the process of winning government contracts today is extremely manual and opaque. Businesses can’t easily find relevant contracts, spend 40-80 hours drafting proposals, and don’t get detailed feedback on why they won or lost a contract. Odo is the first AI-powered platform to help businesses win state and local government contracts. Odo can 1) find relevant contracts, 2) draft proposals, and 3) analyze wins and losses through public records sourcing. Founders Yooni Ahn and Andrew Wagner experienced this problem first-hand and are excited to solve it for others. Odo’s customers have saved up to 80% of time spent on proposals and doubled their government contract pipeline already. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/g23X6nPQ. Congrats, Yooni and Andrew, on the launch!
