Congratulations to David Schwartz, MD, who has been named the 2024 recipient of the 39th annual Alton Ochsner Award Relating Smoking and Disease! Dr. Schwartz, a distinguished professor of medicine and immunology and director of the Program to Advance Physician Scientists and Translational Research at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz School of Medicine, is being recognized for his groundbreaking research on the genetic and environmental factors contributing to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. He discovered that a specific change in the MUC5B gene significantly increases the risk of developing the condition, and smoking can increase this risk by three to five times. His discovery opens new doors for early identification and treatment of this disease. As we honor the legacy of Dr. Alton Ochsner, who first linked smoking to lung cancer, we continue to support researchers like Dr. Schwartz, who are advancing our understanding of smoking-related diseases. Congratulations, Dr. Schwartz, on this well-deserved recognition! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gG2fxq-6

From a tiny NICU preemie weighing just 1 pound, 9 ounces, to a dedicated Ochsner employee and proud husband and father, Matthew Broussard’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Born in August 1978, 14 weeks early, Matt defied the odds thanks to the expert and compassionate care provided to him by Ochsner’s NICU team. This August, Matt returned to Ochsner Baptist’s NICU with his family and Ochsner partner Saul's Light Foundation to celebrate his 46th birthday, reflecting on his incredible journey and the advances in neonatal care that continue to save lives today. His story is one of hope, resilience and the expert care provided at Ochsner. Matt said, “The NICU is where I got my start in life. I have realized that without the outstanding doctors, nurses and staff in the NICU, I would not be where I am today without them. So, if I can help other children and families starting out in life as I did, I will do that!” Read Matt’s full story: https://lnkd.in/g7RzhBF8

Louisiana State University has introduced an innovative AI stethoscope to detect heart problems and other health issues. This device uses artificial intelligence to help doctors make more accurate diagnoses, which could lead to finding problems earlier and improving patient care. Olabode Agaja, D.O., a pediatric sports medicine physician at Ochsner Hospital for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, treats patients from toddlers to 25-year-olds. He says the key is getting injuries checked out early so that they don't progress to require intervention rather than ignoring the pain and escalating into something more serious.  Dr. Agaja says it's important to get an athlete's body ready for the different challenges of their sport, like speeding up for a football tackle or jumping over a hurdle on the track, to help prevent injuries and burnout. Leonardo Seoane M.D., F.A.C.P., the founding dean of Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM) and executive vice president & chief academic officer for Ochsner Health, shared a powerful op-ed in Newsweek on creating a more equitable and diverse medical workforce. In his piece, Dr. Seoane shares his journey to becoming a doctor as a first-generation immigrant from Cuba. “I can attest that education has the power to transform lives, but unfortunately, many students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers they struggle to overcome. Socio-economic status and racial stereotypes hinder access to higher education, particularly medical school,” said Dr. Seoane. Dr. Seoane emphasizes the importance of partnerships with HBCUs to address the physician shortage and enhance healthcare for marginalized communities. To help create a more equitable and diverse medical workforce, Xavier University of Louisiana recently announced its partnership with Ochsner Health to create Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM). “Access to medical education is important, because to help communities throughout our nation, we must address shortages and lapses in representative health care.” Read the full op-ed to learn more about this visionary approach and how XOCOM is paving the way for change: https://lnkd.in/gx4PWDWq.
