U.S. News also announced Tuesday, July 16, that six specialties ranked in the nation's top 10%: gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology. This marks the beginning of an exciting journey toward enhancing orthopedic care and sports medicine in our community. The new institute will equip athletes at every level with cutting-edge technology, focusing on injury prevention, recovery and performance enhancement. Brian E. Congratulations to David Schwartz, MD, who has been named the 2024 recipient of the 39th annual Alton Ochsner Award Relating Smoking and Disease! Dr. Schwartz, a distinguished professor of medicine and immunology and director of the Program to Advance Physician Scientists and Translational Research at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz School of Medicine, is being recognized for his groundbreaking research on the genetic and environmental factors contributing to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. He discovered that a specific change in the MUC5B gene significantly increases the risk of developing the condition, and smoking can increase this risk by three to five times. His discovery opens new doors for early identification and treatment of this disease. As we honor the legacy of Dr. Alton Ochsner, who first linked smoking to lung cancer, we continue to support researchers like Dr. Schwartz, who are advancing our understanding of smoking-related diseases.
