VICTORY: Mexico has created a new marine protected area! 🪸 The declaration follows three Oceana scientific expeditions in this area to learn more about the ecosystem and help find a way for this protected area to benefit local communities, fishers, and wildlife. Oceana will continue to work with the Mexican government and artisanal fishers to achieve common goals that will secure the ocean´s abundance for present and future generations.

About us
Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is rebuilding abundant and biodiverse oceans by winning science-based policies in countries that control one-quarter of the world’s wild fish catch. With more than 275 victories that stop overfishing, habitat destruction, oil and plastic pollution, and the killing of threatened species like turtles, whales, and sharks, Oceana’s campaigns are delivering results. A restored ocean means that 1 billion people can enjoy a healthy seafood meal every day, forever. Together, we can save the oceans and help feed the world. Visit Oceana.org to learn more.

Last week, Oceana Canada Senior Plastics Campaigner, Anthony Merante, spoke to the Science & Research standing committee of the Canadian government as an expert on plastics and recycling. He reinforced the need to reduce single-use plastic waste by implementing upstream measures such as banning single-use plastics and non-recyclable packaging, and promoting refill and reuse systems. 🚨 BREAKING: Oil pollution in UK seas is being HUGELY underestimated - when Big Oil's permit breaches are added to accidental oil spills, the total oil spilled increases by AT LEAST 43%. 🤯 ⚠️ Our new report shows UK marine protected areas have suffered 248 oil spills from #BigOil’s permit breaches since 2021. Nearly half of these didn’t even bother to report the volume of oil spewing into our seas. 😡 🛢️ Big Oil is polluting our waters, and it's so much worse than you think. The Common Fisheries Policy legally requires EU countries to allocate fishing opportunities based on transparent and objective criteria, considering the benefits to society, the economy, and the environment. While ensuring access to quotas for small-scale, low-impact vessels supports local jobs and protects the marine environment 🌊, many countries, in practice, grant higher quotas to industrial vessels that have historically caught the most. 📹 Listen to these artisanal fishers from 🇩🇰, 🇮🇪 & 🇪🇸 calling on their governments to #MakeFishingFair and transparent.

👏 GREAT NEWS California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation to eliminate plastic film bags at grocery store checkouts across California! Plastic bags pollute our coasts and harm marine life, so this is a big win for our oceans! 🐬 Thank to Senator Catherine Blakespear & Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan for championing the bill to #BanTheBag.

🌊🎷 On Tuesday, we gathered in New York City for “An Evening of Jazz,” presented by Blancpain, to celebrate our oceans! We were thrilled to be joined by the talented Rumer Willis and Brian Newman, and honored that distinguished guests like Oceana Board Members Ted Danson, Susan Rockefeller, and Sam Waterston all came together to support Oceana’s mission to protect and restore the world’s oceans! As Ted Danson said, “Every Oceana victory belongs to all of us—because we are making change together!” https://oceana.ly/4gklvHc

This North Atlantic right whale is in serious jeopardy. Dropcloth—an older whale with sightings going back to 1978— was spotted suffering from his fifth known entanglement in late July 2024. In poor condition, Dropcloth’s injuries are serious, and without intervention, he is tragically likely to die from this entanglement. Every day, North Atlantic right whales must fight for their lives, navigating waters where boat strikes and deadly fishing gear threaten their survival. With only 356 right whales left in the world, including just 70 breeding females, time is running out. To save them from extinction, we must act now! Add your name to protect the #RightWhaleToSave today: https://oceana.ly/49b8MCj
