Google is no stranger to antitrust scrutiny—in August, another federal judge ruled it had built up an unfair position in the online search market. The company has previously faced a bevy of antitrust probes over issues like its app store operations and the Android mobile operating system. The market of A.I.-powered glasses appears to be heating up as tech giants race to create the next best personal A.I. devices. Later this month, Meta is slated to unveil Orion, the company’s long-rumored AR glasses, which CTO Andrew Bosworth touted as “the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain.” Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat, also plans to reveal its fifth-generation AR glasses, called Spectacles, which can overlay custom filters over a user’s physical surroundings and record videos. Now, startups have entered the playing field, too, with A.I.-powered eyewear in an effort to take on Big Tech in the A.I. wearables space. The major art fairs of New York Art Week wrapped on Sunday, and the biggest takeaway is that there is a growing sense of fatigue in cultural production, exacerbated by the pandemic’s oversaturation. Despite this, dealers were able to breathe a sigh of relief after a tough summer, with many reporting renewed interest and strong sales early in the fair. This provided much-needed support for several galleries, as multiple sources confirmed to Observer that more than one small- to mid-level showroom in the city had been considering shutting its doors. It’s not unusual for collectors to donate to foreign museums and cultural institutions, but it can be a bit more complicated for an American taxpayer than donating to a nonprofit institution in the United States. You can, of course, donate artwork to any museum anywhere in the world, but if you want to declare a tax deduction for the gift, it might not qualify. Notwithstanding illusions of a better past, by every measure associated with well-being—education, health, literacy, sanitation, wealth, lower unemployment—generally speaking, America is better off today than ever before. Yet, we rank 23rd in the Happiness Index, falling out of the top 20 for the first time. How can that be? Despite the six o’clock news and that fear-jerking story making the rounds on social media, even violent crime is down dramatically. Americans are also wealthier than ever, although many report feeling the opposite. So, why does everyone think things are so bad? Directors, actors and media from nearly 100 countries will soon converge in Toronto for the annual Toronto International Film Festival. But as the festival approaches, it’s worth remembering that the real artistic value of an airport isn’t how it gets used as a backdrop. It’s how it connects and drives the artistic economy of a city, a region or even an entire country. Artists, patrons, executives, political leaders—we all need to understand how air travel supports the artistic value chain and understand how to make the most of it. Upskilling and reskilling are new-age slang for the long-standing corporate training industry. Companies invest billions annually in workforce development programs that improve employee well-being by teaching new technologies, sharpening soft skills like decision-making and problem-solving and engaging high performers with educational opportunities. While HR departments at companies of all sizes undoubtedly understand the value of support services and job training associated with workforce development, few actually track the outcomes of these initiatives, and even fewer track the ROI.
