“You can’t be a person who’s in conflict and you’re trying to resolve conflict,” she said. “It’s hard, and because that work is hard, you have to be centered. You have to nourish your soul. You have to have your head on straight.” Meet Iyana Titus, our Assistant Commissioner of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. About us
The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is New York City's principal provider of recreational and athletic facilities and programs. Our parks are home to free concerts, world-class sports events, and cultural festivals. Parks & Recreation is the steward of nearly 14 percent of New York City's land, including thousands of individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We operate athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, public pools, recreational facilities, nature centers, golf courses, and beaches throughout the five boroughs. We also care for monuments and historic house museums and look after hundreds of thousands of street trees (even more within parks).

Welcome to the Wyckoff House Museum! Built around 1652, the original portion of the house is the oldest structure + the first officially designated landmark in New York state. Used as a working colonial farm until 1901, this home traces history through architectural alterations that mirrored the Wyckoff family’s own growth through the years. This week, a newly opened community space continues that tradition of growth on the farm! Check out the brand new space extending the museum’s important work bringing history to life in Brooklyn: wyckoffmuseum.org

All trees are good, but these are (officially) some of NYC's greatest! 🌳 🌲 After taking in over 270 public nominations, our committee of experts and thought leaders from prominent colleges and universities, civic institutions, authors, and arborists chose trees that best represent the diversity and significance of NYC’s urban forest. Today, we added 61 new trees to our list of 120 Great Trees, the first update in 40 years! These trees have witnessed history, are symbols, or are just plain cool! What started as an event request led to a new kind of outdoor adventure - volunteering! Thanks to Dean Richard Alvarez and more than 300 volunteers from Millennium Arts Academy HS took to Soundview Park to turn their field day into a Day of Service! We supplied the gloves and bags and they showed up with the spirit to make a change, proving again that volunteering outdoors together is fun! But don't take our word for it--here's what the students had to say! “It was good, a nice experience to bond with our classmates and community"- Kaveon G. , 10th grade "It was fun and productive " Destiny M., 12 grade "10 out 10 must try again, I loved it!" Alondra L., 10 grade See how you can get involved by matching with volunteer initiatives in your area through our Let’s Green NYC Volunteer Group finder: on.nyc.gov/3uaXtIJ

Yesterday, we cut the ribbon for new improvements to the playground at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Sotomayor Houses! With ADA-accessible play equipment, water features, a seating area, and fun legal-themed details, this project is part of a $23 million interagency initiative to renovate playgrounds and open spaces at NYCHA sites. "Our City's public open spaces are vital for strengthening community connections, improving health, and enhancing public safety, as well as providing a venue for play and relaxation,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue at the ribbon cutting. "We are thrilled to unveil these playground enhancements at Sotomayor Houses with our partners at NYCHA. We are sure that this revitalized playground will be enjoyed by NYCHA residents and community members alike for many years to come."
