Our Founder and CEO, Reverend Luis Cortes, Jr., and his wife, Damaris Cortés, joined Latino leaders from across the Commonwealth at the Pittsburgh Pirates game to celebrate Roberto Clemente’s legacy with a day of service. Roberto Clemente’s sons, Roberto Jr., Ricky, and Luis, threw out the first pitch, and the Great One’s grandkids, Roberto Clemente III and Leo Clemente, also took the field on #ClementeDay. Clemente Day, established by Major League Baseball, honors the life of this Pirates legend, Hall of Famer, and 15-time All-Star—not only for his achievements on the field but for his dedication to community. The event celebrated the diversity, culture, and contributions of the Hispanic community. Rev. Cortés was honored alongside other remarkable leaders like Cynthia Figueroa, President & CEO of JEVS Human Services, and Carolina DiGiorgio, Vice President of Government & External Relations at PECO Energy. A special recognition also went to Rev. Bonnie Camarda, Director of Partnerships for The Salvation Army and Chair of Esperanza's Board, for her outstanding work serving communities across the state. We want to thank everyone who attended the Latino Charter School Coalition (LCSC) press conference yesterday at Taller Puertorriqueño! The mission of the LCSC is to increase academic achievement and outcomes for the students we serve by ending systemic racism in public K-12 education and creating a more equitable and non-biased system of charter oversight and renewal, and the creation of expansion opportunities for Latino founded and led public charter schools in Philadelphia. The goal [of the LCSC] is to support Latino founded and led charter schools through legislative advocacy, policy creation, and resource identification to improve student life and academic outcomes.
