A recent news story from WFTX FOX 4 highlights 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 the City of North Port is facing. Stemming from a unique rule in its 1959 charter, which restricts the city from borrowing funds without prior approval. This pay-as-you-go requirement has escalated infrastructure costs and placed a heavy burden on current residents. As 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 explains, “We are literally leaving hundreds of millions of dollars on the table,” as nearby cities like Tampa, Orlando, and Sarasota access critical federal and state loans North Port cannot secure. This restriction impacts essential wet infrastructure maintenance, with current residents shouldering rising costs, underscoring the need for modernized funding mechanisms to sustain development and operational capacity.
