On display at American Academy Of Optometry's #Academy24 in Indianapolis: a poster demonstrating that AI-powered home monitoring programs, like ForeseeHome, make a meaningful impact in the care of #AMD patients by optometrists.   Mary Beth Yackey, OD presents a wet AMD conversion case detected early with the help of ForeseeHome. Dr. Yackey’s office was alerted of a potential conversion in the patient’s right eye and patient was promptly evaluated. Dr. Yackey diagnosed the conversion to wet AMD with subretinal fluid and significant development of pigment epithelial detachment almost two months before their next scheduled visit. Jonathan Weston, OD, Mary Beth Yackey, OD and Mohammad Rafieetary , OD, FAAO, FORS, Dipl ABO, ABCMO present an analysis of AI-based remote monitoring use in optometric settings. They found that there is no difference in visual or management outcomes between patients referred by optometrists and those by ophthalmologists for the ForeseeHome AMD Monitoring Program. The Windy City did not disappoint for this year’s #AAO2024 with both amazing weather and insightful content. Here are our top highlights from the meeting and beyond.    During Eyecelerator, Reggie Sanders, MD gave the keynote speech on barriers to adoption of technology in the retina space. He included a case study on how Notal Vision developed and brought to market the first in class, #AI-powered SCANLY Home OCT system.    Anat Loewenstein, MD at Innovate Retina discussed the impact of home OCT monitoring on neovascular #AMD patients. Early studies point to the potential reduction in burden on patients and caregivers, which translates to significant productivity gains for the society.    The pivotal trial results that led to SCANLY Home OCT’s clearance by the FDA, were covered both at American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Retina Subspecialty Day as well as the main meeting by Eric Schneider, MD and Sri Krishna Mukkamala, MD.     Several researchers including Judy E. Kim, MD, FARVO, FASRS and Dan Martin, MD presented on how they view home OCT being used in clinical care and clinical trials. A poster from Paul Hahn, MD demonstrated that #homeOCT is likely to create a net benefit for neovascular AMD patients, doctors, and the wider healthcare community.    With so much buzz around artificial intelligence, #ophthalmology continues to demonstrate how to meaningfully employ its use.
