“I love taking care of cancer patients but never thought I would be one.” – Sandra Mills, breast cancer survivor and Norton Cancer Institute nurse. Every breast cancer journey is unique, filled with courage, strength, and resilience. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing the powerful stories of our patients at Norton Cancer Institute. This is Sandra’s story. 💞 “I am a 46-year-old mother of two amazing boys. I have been married for 15 years to my wonderful husband, Jason. I am a dog mom to four wild pups! I have been a nurse for 18 years and have worked in oncology for almost 10 years. In 2021, my life changed dramatically. That December, after a series of health and personal challenges, I was performing a regular self-breast exam and noticed an area in my right breast that felt firmer than the rest. Lumps in my breasts weren’t unusual, as I had experienced previous benign lumps with biopsies in both breasts. I was shocked when I had my mammogram in February 2022, and the radiologist said she thought it was cancer. On Feb. 22, the results were in: I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma ER+, PR-, Her2+. I made the difficult decision to have bilateral mastectomies. I had to undergo chemotherapy and then radiation. I started chemotherapy at Norton Cancer Institute – Downtown the day before my birthday. The loss of my hair, especially my eyebrows, caused me to go into a depression. I had body image issues due to the mastectomy and the scars that were left behind. It really affected me mentally and physically. I am so grateful for the behavioral oncology team at Norton Cancer Institute that helped me through my depression. The Resource Center services encouraged family support and involvement. I used art therapy with my boys during my chemotherapy treatments. This helped with my healing process by turning a bad moment into a good memory with my kids. After chemotherapy, I had 25 radiation treatments to my chest wall, axilla, and supraclavicular nodes. I chose to be treated at Norton Cancer Institute because I knew I would get the best care. Dr. Mark Cornett and my co-workers were amazing! They went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. They treated me like a person, not just a number. I never thought I would laugh so much during such a stressful time. Going through this cancer journey has given me a new perspective on working with our cancer patients. I definitely made the right choice by coming to Norton Cancer Institute for my treatment. The doctors and staff focused on treating me as a whole person, not just the diagnosis. I am a cancer survivor and a better nurse thanks to Norton Cancer Institute and the amazing staff that got me through it all!” Take a moment for yourself—regular self-exams and mammograms are key to early detection. Don’t wait, protect your health today. 🎀 Schedule your mammogram here: https://bit.ly/3Al06NA
