Thursdays, I post about mastering difficult conversations. What if I suddenly find myself in a difficult conversation because someone else brought it up? Because we don't always have the opportunity to choose the time or place when we get into a hard conversation. Someone wants to give us feedback, or they want to bring up something we didn't realize we were doing. But it won't feel good. We'll be caught off guard and we'll end up being in fight, flight, or freeze mode. Our adrenaline will be pumping and we won't be thinking straight. So what can you do? Slow the conversation down by: 1️⃣ Assess if you're able to take a break and come back to the conversation after you've had some time to think and prepare properly. 2️⃣ Use a grounding/coping skill to calm your nerves and emotions down, so that you can use the rational part of your brain instead of the fight/flight/freeze (survival) part of your brain.. 3️⃣ SLOW the conversation down by asking questions/exploring more about the situation: - "Tell me more" - "What bothers you about this?" - "I appreciate you bringing this up for me." - "What is the outcome you're looking for?" - "How can we make sure we're on the same page here?" The name of the game is to slow things down so you can really think rationally again and RESPOND instead of REACT. This is also why preparation is so important. Because the reality is we don't always have time to prepare. You practice and role play and script when you're thinking clearly, so that when these situations pop up, you already have more clarity on your values and your purpose. So take the time to practice, ask hard questions, have deep conversations. You'll find yourself more confident and less taken aback when someone else brings up the conversation. What other strategies do you have to respond when someone else initiates a difficult conversation with you? 👇 ------- I go through tips like this and more in my weekly newsletter on mastering difficult conversations and communication.
