About us
Northeast Maritime Institute is a private, co-educational institution that offers students an opportunity to pursue maritime, career-oriented education. Our curriculum serves to provide required marine safety education, ship operation courses, Coast Guard license and document courses, as well as programs that provide students with a certificate and Merchant Marine Document upon completion. Our Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science provides for theory, soft-practical, and applied learning through lecture, hands-on and simulator training, as well as Summers at Sea to ensure the success of students. Utilizing as a “cohort” model of education, faculty and students become both learners and students together – fostering our philosophy that an intimate educational experience nurtures not only the individual, but also the cohort. Graduates will earn an Associate degree as a building block for their future as well as several licenses and endorsements from the United States Coast Guard, Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administration, and/ or International Yacht Association, to enable them to start their career after graduation. They will be equipped to safely and efficiently manage, maintain, adapt, and operate within the current and future needs of the maritime industry. Recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a world leader in delivering top-quality maritime education and training services worldwide, NMI also offers cutting edge, online training programs for advanced certifications and learning to global students and maritime professionals. Always true to our roots, programs at NMI embody the pursuit of excellence in maritime education, upholding the centuries-old New Bedford tradition of providing skilled seafarers to the world.

NMI College of Maritime Science students had the distinct pleasure of visiting USCGC CAMPBELL in Newport, RI. We learned all about the missions the CAMPBELL is responsible for, what it means to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard, and the opportunities available to NMI students and graduates to serve in the Coast Guard through a unique Lateral Enlistment Program agreement between NMI and the Coast Guard. A huge thank you to Commander Harris and the crew of the CAMPBELL for their hospitality! Bravo Zulu!

Northeast Maritime Institute - College of Maritime Science President, Eric R. Dawicki, recently visited the New York Harbor School, where he had the pleasure of engaging with both high school and middle school students passionate about the maritime industry. Eric had the opportunity to tour the school’s impressive marine operations, welding, and aquaculture programs, each showcasing the students’ skill, dedication, and hands-on approach to learning. Particularly inspiring was witnessing their support of the Billion Oyster Project—a transformative initiative focused on restoring New York Harbor's oyster population to improve water quality and revitalize the local marine ecosystem. The Harbor School’s commitment to practical, impactful education deeply resonated with Eric, reflecting a shared vision of fostering the next generation of maritime professionals and environmental stewards.

College of Maritime Science students are hard at work prepping and painting surfaces before the cold weather arrives! Engine room deck plates for Tug MOHALO have been sanded and painted. Cohort 17 is hard at work getting launch KEHOE ready for a fresh paint job so she can go back in the water! Student Sabrina was a huge help in cleaning the propellor and applying a coat of "barnacle buster" zinc spray.
