The nation has had the worst freshmen enrollment since the pandemic and North Dakota is going gangbusters – 15% differential – we may be the best in the nation,” said NDUS Chancellor Mark Hagerott. “We all got together when the FAFSA debacle happened and came out No. 2 in the nation on completions and it’s easy to say ‘what is North Dakota doing?’ And it’s called collaboration and teamwork.” Read more at: https://bit.ly/48tJdNJ

Katie Fitzsimmons, NDUS director of student affairs, recently joined Dr. William Burns, director of the North Dakota State University Counseling Center, and Sarah Dixon-Hackey, public policy ambassador for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - N.D. Chapter, for a discussion on the Building the Raft While Drowning podcast. Building the Raft While Drowning offers a deeper look into the challenges of finding mental health services in rural communities and the many ways mental and behavioral health services are shaped by public policy. During their time together, Fitzsimmons, Burns and Dixon-Hackey discussed mental health services for college students across the state, the epidemic of loneliness that has reached campuses and the role that talk therapy can have on improving anyone's life. Last week, Mark Hagerott PhD gave a presentation on the emergence of generative AI, intelligent machines and the metaverse during an Annual Meeting held by the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association’s (SHEEO) in Washington, D.C. The chancellor spoke about how generative AI will challenge higher education systems as profoundly as the invention of the internet and how state university systems will be called upon to help their communities thrive as artificially intelligent worlds emerge. He also spoke about resiliency and how leaders must prioritize adaptability and transformability in the AI realm while maximizing reliability and meeting the day-to-day needs of students.
