Department of Public Safety The overall mission of the Department of Public Safety is to improve the quality of life for North Carolinians by reducing crime and enhancing public safety. The secretary serves as the sole representative on the Governor's Cabinet for the state's law enforcement, correction and emergency response community. The department focuses citizen and legislative attention on law enforcement and public safety issues, such as drinking and driving, underage access to alcohol and tobacco, the proper use of child safety seats, crime prevention, and preparation for natural disasters. In addition to natural disasters, the department is constantly updating plans and providing training for local officials to respond to emergencies such as terrorism, communicable diseases, nuclear power plant incidents and civil unrest. This agency serves as the coordinating agency for North Carolina's homeland security preparedness.

Thank you to our North Carolina State Highway Patrol partners part of the Swift Water Rescue Team deployed to Western NC for #HeleneNC support.
Hurricane Helene Response: Swift Water Rescue Team While there is so much work to do in the days and months ahead, members of the State Highway Patrol have been working throughout #HeleneNC and will continue to support the people of NC. Members a part of the Patrol’s Swift Water Rescue Team were deployed to WNC prior to the storms arrival and have been active throughout. The team included one of the Patrol’s medical doctors, Dr. Luciano, who was able to provide medical specific assistance. So far, the team has conducted over 300 rescues and welfare checks of structures and vehicles looking for those in need.

Last week, the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention hosted students from the Department of Public Safety’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship Program for a weeklong rotation learning the ins and outs of juvenile justice. From juvenile court and community programs to touring juvenile justice facilities and community-based residential placements, students had a chance to explore the wide range of services the Division offers for North Carolina’s youth and families. Last week, members of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention management team paid a visit to Samarcand Training Academy in Jackson Springs, observing basic trainings in progress for juvenile justice officers and juvenile court counselors. During this three week training, the DJJDP Staff Training and Development team provides new employees with the skills they will need to successfully work with youth in the juvenile justice system. Lessons include basic counseling skills, communication skills, methods for working with families, Youth Mental Health First Aid, verbal de-escalation and defensive techniques. At the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce's Sept. 18 First Responder Appreciation Breakfast, State Capitol Police officers Sgt. Lisa Matthews and Ofc. Ryan Strickland received the Outstanding Service Award. On September 13, 2024, the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) Division along with the Smithfield Police Department executed a search warrant at a location in Smithfield. The search resulted in the seizure of over 11 pounds of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, one rifle, one handgun, and U.S. currency. Last week, the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention held its inaugural reentry simulation, highlighting the difficulties youth face after involvement with the juvenile justice system, including securing employment, housing and other basic needs. This event was a collaboration between the DJJDP Reentry Services and Education Services sections. In addition to DJJDP staff, this event was also attended by several members of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. #WeAreNCDPS
