Nutter Butter is the latest social media brand viral rage... but does it really mean anything anymore??? In the race for virality, brands are losing their identity. Nutter Butter’s recent TikTok activity is a clear example of how “unhinged” marketing can go wrong. We’ve seen brands like Duolingo and ScrubDaddy push boundaries in playful and innovative ways, but Nutter Butter’s content feels more off-putting. It seems like an attempt to resonate with a younger Gen Alpha Skibbidi Toilet loving crowd but the reaction from viewers, even Gen Zs, has not been positive. Young social media users are starting to get exhausted and annoyed at the plug-and-chug machine of brands on social media, as companies reach for virality. While Nutter Butter has certainly generated buzz, it’s hard to see how this aligns with their long-term goals. Sure, viral moments are great, but what happens after the impressions fade? The content doesn’t tie back to their product in any meaningful way. And while we’re not advocating for overt product placement in every post (because no one wants constant ads), brand alignment is crucial. If your social media presence doesn’t support your values, what are you really achieving? At NinetyEight, we’ve always believed that virality shouldn’t be the main goal. It’s time for brands to focus on meaningful engagement.
