There’s sneakerheads. Then there’s EKINs.
Knowing our product backward and forward (literally, it’s in the name), EKINs are the technical experts of Nike footwear, spanning our retail doors across the world. It’s a given that diversity is a defining part of the EKIN way.
“As EKINs, we’re asked to step out into our communities and break down barriers for people of color who want to get into these fields. We’re given the freedom to connect with our communities and consumers, educate them about our product, and even give them the chance to trial our shoes and give feedback. Product expertise should come from anywhere.”
That’s Daniel Eastland, a performance running EKIN based in Detroit, which played host to last weekend’s Black Footwear Forum (BFF). The conference offered Dan the opportunity to meet other EKINs across the country, hear from design luminaries like Wilson Smith and attend seminars with some of the most diverse, influential voices in the footwear industry. You can’t help but be inspired around that kind of company, Dan says. Meeting others who are breaking down barriers in the field — designers, product creatives, and especially other EKINs — motivates him to teach the next generation of Nike product experts, starting in his own backyard of Detroit.
“Anybody is capable of getting into these fields, as long as they’re adamant about their goals and they push toward them," Dan says.
