We are excited to announce the release of our Youth Data and Intervention Initiative (YDII) Report Volume II, which represents the next chapter in NICJR’s detailed, protracted research and data analysis project to learn what specific risk factors within a jurisdiction lead children to have a greater likelihood of being involved in gun violence when they grow up. The vast majority of serious crimes, especially shootings, are committed by a small group of young adults (ages 18–35) who have a combination of identifiable risk factors. When they were much younger—as young as 11 years old—most of these individuals already had a series of risk factors that distinguished them from other youth. With a clear understanding of these risk factors, school districts or other systems can connect high-risk youth and their families to intensive, community-based interventions before they become involved in violence. California Partnership for Safe Communities (CPSC) is proud to be partnering with the City and County of San Francisco, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), the Street Violence Intervention Program, The National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (NICJR) and other organizations on the San Francisco Violence Reduction Initiative. Forthcoming evaluation findings indicate that this evidence-informed approach has helped significantly reduce violence in southeast San Francisco. VRI is also playing an important role in helping drive homicide down to record lows in San Francisco. Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs are a crucial facet of Washington, D.C.’s public safety ecosystem. In his latest op-ed for The Appeal, our Executive Director David Muhammad details why the D.C. Police Union’s calls to defund these live-saving programs are misguided. “The structure, coordination, focus, and accountability of the violence intervention work in D.C. needs to improve. But that is not the fault of the CVI workers. That is the responsibility of the D.C. government. The District has yet to implement a citywide, coordinated, appropriately funded, and correctly managed violence reduction strategy.
