The report provides an overview of outstanding 2023 weather events, followed by an in-depth analysis of historical climate data and future projections for New Jersey. The authors focus on temperature, sea-level rise, precipitation, and extreme events, including a discussion of the summer 2023 Canadian wildfires that impacted air quality throughout New Jersey and how wildfires may be exacerbated with continued climate change.

Rutgers Climate Corps member Irawati Anand conducted an analysis of climate risks in Haddonfield, N.J., for an update of the borough’s Master Plan. Municipalities in New Jersey are required to incorporate a climate change-related hazard vulnerability assessment in the land-use plan elements of their Master Plans. Jeanne Herb, founding CCRC co-director, will be retiring as Executive Director of the Environmental Analysis and Communications Group at the Bloustein School effective June 30. Her leadership has been instrumental in creating the CCRC and setting it on a solid foundation for the future. Stepping into Jeanne’s role at the Bloustein School and CCRC is our own Lucas Marxen, former Associate Director of the Office of Research Analytics at the Rutgers NJ Agricultural Experiment Station and leader of the CCRC’s NJ ADAPT team. Congratulations, Jeanne, and welcome, Lucas. We wish you all the best as you embark on these new chapters in your lives and careers.

The NJCCRC participated in three trainings hosted by the NJ Association of County and City Health Officials (NJACCHO) – May 8 at Stockton University, May 13 at Montclair State University, and May 14 at Mercer County College. NJCCRC staff gave presentations on Climate Change and Health, Using NJ ADAPT tools to Assess Climate Impacts, How Communities Plan, Climate and Health Resources, plus listening session on participants' needs to understand how NJCCRC can support public health practitioners. Participants included county and local health officials, community-based organizations, and County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers. #njclimate, #publichealth, #Rutgers
