Now that Newtopia Now is in the books, we checked in with the founders and leaders of several emerging conscious CPG brands who exhibited at the show to get their perspectives on the first-time trade show and conference. With a re-imagined concept that incorporated high visibility standardized booth designs, tabletop pavilions, educational session right on the show floor, interactive meeting lounges, and an intimate floor layout that evened out the playing field, emerging and early-stage brands received significant buyer attention at the inaugural Newtopia Now. More than 7,000 attendees registered for the event and 560 brands exhibited at the show. Many were first-time exhibitors, coming from diverse backgrounds. Yet, these entrepreneurs all shared that gathering with buyers, influencers, business leaders, industry experts and others was of great value in building relationships, learning about the natural retail market and growing their businesses and brands. As natural and organic packaged foods expand to include global flavors, entrepreneurs should keep an eye on one American tradition: soul food. Black consumers are looking for foods that are culturally relevant, convenient and a good value. At the same time, they want that food to help them develop healthy eating habits and experience new foods, according to Nourishing equity: Meeting Black consumers’ needs in food, a 2022 report from the McKinsey Institute for Black Economic Mobility. This Newtopia Now session, From Legacy to Leadership: Black Culinary History & the Future of CPG, opens with Adrian Miller, The Soul Food Scholar and James Beard Award-winning author. Miller presents a history of soul—the words, the music and the food—and a look at where soul food is going as consumers seek more nutritious meals with the flavors they grew up with. For HIVE Interactive CEO Mitch Mitchem, the most frustrating part of teaching people how to use artificial intelligence as a tool to enhance their efficiency, productivity and creativity is the stark—even extreme—way most people regard the technology. “It’s either like, 'get on board or you’re going to miss out' or 'it’s terrifying, and we’re all going to die,'” Mitchem says. “There’s no in-between.” Mitchem, whose company is on a mission to revolutionize the way organizations engage with AI, is bringing his humancentric tech message to Natural Products Expo West this spring. During his keynote presentation and workshop, he plans to share how he and his team use AI and how retailers, managers and marketers can leverage AI tools to accelerate their output and streamline processes. Recent buzz and consumer research shows consumers of all ages are interested in longevity and improving health span, not just older folks. Let’s start by defining what we mean by health span. Today, more consumers are prioritizing preventive health measures to ensure they age with quality in mind, not just quantity. You might think that this category mostly consists of health nuts and serious optimizers, but in recent Nutrition Business Journal consumer research, the data suggests otherwise. As with so many independent natural products retailers, Bristol Farms got its start long before the industry moved mainstream. The first Bristol Farms, opened in 1982 by Irv Gronsky and Mike Burbank, served as a community grocer in Rolling Hills, California. Today, 13 Bristol Farms stores dot Southern California. Decades of experience navigating the industry’s wilderness of consumer forces and movements has made Bristol Farms’ trends antennae keenly sensitive. Some trends take off and lead to strong long-term sales. Others amount to brief eruptions of consumer interest before drifting away. Bristol Farms works hard to invest in the trends that stick.
