The Commission House Apartments in Lowertown St. Paul was built in 1889 and operated as the name suggests - as a commission or brokerage house for local trade that traveled by steamboat or rail. Most recently, the building was occupied by Seestedt's Carpet which utilized the space for over 50 years. The three-story building was redeveloped into 26 studio apartments with street-level retail, and has received numerous awards since its completion, including the NAIOP Minnesota Award of Excellence, Minnesota Real Estate Journal Award, and Finance & Commerce Top Projects of 2019. The City of Minneapolis is working to reduce the 33% vacancy rate in its downtown central business district by making it easier for developers to get through the city's review process for office-to-residential conversions. Mayor Jacob Frey signed off on the new policy in the lobby of Groove Lofts at Northstar Center, the recently completed Taconic Capital Advisors, Polaris Developments Group, Kothe, and Sherman Associates project that is set to provide “... living, working, playing and staying," in the words of Chris Sherman. This is EXACTLY how we refer to the roof of the Lake Burgen rest stop, a project we are working on right now. This is an excellent story on how vision, tenacity, and collaboration can create outstanding community assets.
