Using technology in an election isn't a replacement for transparency—it's a tool to enhance it, making sure elections are both efficient and secure. In a recent Marketplace interview with Meghan McCarty Carino, Verified Voting Foundation President and CEO Pamela Smith shares why hand-counting ballots on election night has steadily declined across the country, despite recent efforts to bring it back, including the new rule in Georgia requiring the number of ballots to be hand-counted on election night: "You get a rapid election night count if you're using voting technology that counts ballots automatically. And it's important that you can use hand counts to supplement that and get the best of both worlds by checking to make sure the machines did it right. On Wednesday, we journeyed to Capitol Hill to support the State Revenue Alliance and Fair Share America's press conference fighting for fair tax policy heading into 2025. Over 200 state-based tax justice advocates traveled to Washington, D.C. to express the urgent need for tax reforms that prioritize working families, make the wealthy pay their fair share, and hold corporations accountable. We were joined by some exciting speakers, including Senator Michael Bennett, Rep. Gwen Moore, and Rep. Lloyd Doggett, NEA President Becky Pringle, and NDWA President Ai-jen Poo. On #WomensEqualityDay, we want to honor the incredible suffragists who worked tirelessly to secure the passage and adoption of the 19th Amendment, which enshrined voting rights for some women into the Constitution. Those brave women got into a whole bunch of “good trouble” and shook loose an institution founded by and for men. Their work fundamentally made our country a better place. Generations of troublemakers followed, securing voting rights for ALL women. Now, more than a century later, women are still making “good trouble” and leading the way, from the ballot box to the White House, to fight for our fundamental freedoms. A special shout out to New Heights clients like She The People Founder Aimee Allison and Verified Voting President & CEO Pamela Smith who are some of those leaders keeping the suffragists quest for equality alive and thriving today!
