As we continue to battle the affordable housing crisis, our major opportunities for manufactured-home ownership include preservation, expansion, and awareness.
Efficient, inexpensive, and in-demand – two of those words are often missing when referring to homeownership options in the United States. Manufactured homes are making a comeback and challenging that convention. With much of the country’s for-purchase housing out of affordable reach for a growing number of households, these inexpensive homes offer a uniquely affordable onramp to homeownership. Available in a wide range of sizes and designs, manufactured housing units are smaller by an average of about 1,000 square feet than single-family homes. They’re also more affordable. Excluding any land costs, the average manufactured home purchase price is half that per square foot of a new site-built home. We are thrilled to be celebrating the establishment of New Hampshire’s 150th resident-owned community (ROC), Derry Oak Village. When New Hampshire Community Loan Fund was launched in 1983 to support the creation of our nation’s first ROC, the 150th was well beyond the horizon. It took over 40 years, but here we are. We’re proud of the work we’ve accomplished. But more importantly, reaching this milestone inspires us to look ahead. As we dive into our next chapter, we have refreshed our look and feel from the ground up to express where we are as an organization today and where we’re going. In addition, we launched a new website to make it easier for people to find the resources they need, for impact investors to learn about us, and for people to understand how we help communities, nonprofits, and businesses. I was so proud when I received an invitation from President Biden to attend the White House Juneteenth celebration on the South Lawn, last week. Initially, I thought the email I received was some sort of spam, but it was real! The invitation was real, and it was meant for me. I was going to the White House! Sharing a few snaps from the day with you though many more were taken. I will forever have the beautiful memories and emotions leading up to, during and after a once in a lifetime experience like this.
