Next Tuesday, September 10th, is New Hampshire Primary Day. As we approach this day, we draw attention to these powerful quotes by NHCJE Icon, John Lewis. These quotes were apart of a speech made by Lewis in 2012 at the Democratic National Convention. The speech touched on historic suppression of voters' rights, linking past injustices to new voting legislation. We share this due to both its continued relevance as we approach the 2024 election and as we continue to see similar voting legislation, more than a decade later. The population profile for New Hampshire is often over-simplified; conversation typically revolves around New Hampshire’s population being predominantly rural, older, and White. While data supports those generalizations, these opinions lack a general understanding of our local communities and diminishes the value in digging deeper and understanding the more complex and nuanced stories that emerge when looking at the almost 1.4 million people who live, work, play and pray in the Granite State. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to participate in the painting of a Positive Street Art mural alongside MY-TURN, Inc and OPPORTUNITY NETWORKS INC You can check out the mural for yourself at the unveiling this Saturday, August 17th from 11 am -4 pm at Basquil-Sheehan Park!

Policy happens for those who participate! This week, we would like to highlight the Economic Development sector within our recently-released Policy Platform. Within this, we aim to focus our efforts on eliminating racial health disparities in our economic system. This work is organized across each of our six sectors of effort– Civic Engagement, Economic Development, Education, Government, Health, and Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice. As part of an ongoing commitment to justice and equity, the New Hampshire Center for Justice and Equity (NHCJE) launched its first Icon Series last fall, a collection of stickers designed by the 2023 Wheaton College intern Matthew Lambert. This series pays tribute to those who have paved the way for equity and justice across various fronts, including civil rights, racial justice, disability rights, LGBTQ+ rights, workers' rights, and more. Matt has created powerful visual elements that incorporate the core values of NHCJE - Love, Trust, Empathy, Inclusion, and Accountability and we could not be more grateful.
