🌎✈️Introducing the first of the destinations we'll be exploring at Taste of New Futures: Around the World on October 4th! 5 Fun Facts about Sri Lanka🌴🇱🇰: 1️⃣ 🐘🐆🐊 Sri Lanka is slightly larger than the state of West Virginia, but has incredible biodiversity. It's home to 123 species of mammals (such as elephants, leopards, and crocodiles), 227 species of birds, 178 species of reptiles, 122 species of amphibians, and many other animal species. 2️⃣ ☕️Sri Lanka is well known for its tea production. Once known as Ceylon, the first tea plant on the island was once displayed at the Royal Botanical Garden. The country remains a leading exporter of tea with nearly 1 million of its 22 million residents working in the industry. 3️⃣ 👑Sri Lanka was the first country in the world to have a woman prime minister. In July 1960, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, won the general election and became the first woman prime minister in the world. 4️⃣ 📚Sri Lanka has the highest literacy rate in South Asia. The country has a literacy rate of 92%, making it the highest in South Asia as well as one of the highest in Asia. 5️⃣ 💎Sri Lanka is nicknamed the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” and is known as the “Teardrop of India.” The country is known for the plethora of precious gemstones as well as its rich biodiversity. The island’s teardrop shape and location off of India’s coast is what informs its second name. BONUS Fun Fact: 6️⃣🍀Sri Lanka is the source of the word “serendipity” in the English language. Derived from the word “Serendip,” the name Arabs and Persians had for Sri Lanka, the word was created in 1754 by the writer Horace Walpole.
