About us
New Breath Foundation (NBF) mobilizes resources to support Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) harmed by the unjust immigration and criminal justice systems to heal, keep families together, and build movements that shift narratives and policies. Established in 2017 and based in Oakland, CA, NBF grew out of the grassroots movements to prevent community violence, end mass incarceration, address immigration/ deportation issues, and advance racial justice and solidarity. NBF staff and board members have spent decades organizing around these issues, with expertise in community organizing, fundraising, non-profit governance, philanthropy, and leadership development.

"EMAC is important to me because it’s where I feel at home, I feel seen, and I can be my full self merging all my passions and identities." Alongside being voted one of the most diverse cities in the U.S., Stockton, California, has faced decades of institutional racism, redlining, and subsequent under-resourced schools that have led to generations caught in the cycle of poverty and the school-to-prison-to-deportation pipeline. 𝘞𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘵 𝘜𝘴 grantee EMAC Empowering Marginalized Asian Communities is the only non-profit in Stockton that offers leadership and advocacy services for Southeast Asian youth, formerly incarcerated individuals, and immigrants and refugees. It welcomes everyone to the collective fight for change and liberation. Follow EMAC to help build safe and thriving communities today and for every generation to come. https://lnkd.in/gHFXEuaZ #RacialJustice #NationalImmigrantsDay #PeopleNotPrison

"New Breath helped us to fortify our standing and community as a partner and as a viable resource, and a trusted intermediary of value to help connect folks to grassroots organizing that replace these archaic structures and barriers to collective liberation." Watch a clip of an insightful conversation between partners Micky Huihui, Executive Director of Hawaii Peoples Fund and Icela Pelayo, PhD of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation during "𝘞𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘵 𝘜𝘴: Cultivating Hope Through Cross-Racial Solidarity." #Philanthropy #Grantmaking #AANHPI

“It’s very important that I uplift the voices of the women that are still not free because I was once that woman held captive.” Check out APSC’s new video and learn how they’re organizing for decarceration, connecting those on the inside to community, and centering leaders with lived experiences. 𝘞𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘵 𝘜𝘴 Fund grantee Asian Prisoner Support Committee supports currently and formerly incarcerated people seeking a new path through connection while raising awareness about the growing number of AANHPIs being imprisoned, detained, and deported every day.

"In 2009, our 'ohana was struck down by tragedy and resulted in our son' Ekolu, a teenager at the time, receiving a ten-year prison sentence — a first offense in his young life. We had spent years preparing our children for college, career, and life, but were ill-prepared in navigating the criminal justice system." What does the reality of a "pono" or balanced legal system look like for Native Hawaiians? 𝘞𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘵 𝘜𝘴 grantee partner 'Ekolu Mea Nui envisions a truly just system that heals and empowers individuals and communities throughout Hawai'i and for all Kānaka Maoli displaced across the continent facing the unjust impact of the carceral system. Learn more about 'Ekolu Mea Nui and uplift their crucial mission in honor of celebrating #IndigenousPeoplesDay every day. https://ekolumeanui.org/

Thank you to the Henry Luce Foundation Inc for hosting our founder, Eddy Zheng, for a Fireside Chat, "Invisible Yet Targeted: AANHPI in the U.S." We are also deeply appreciative to Anla Cheng, The Serica Initiative for moderating the discussion. In a conversation linking our shared humanity through a global context, Eddy shared his journey from being a 16-year-old juvenile offender serving 20 years in prison and ICE detention to becoming an activist for communities of color and founding New Breath Foundation, a public and community-led charitable organization. It was a life-giving and informative conversation! Photos by Benjamin Bobkoff.

"I always thought the U.S. was a land of second chances, but the reality of deportation tells a different story. The laws can be heartless, and while some deportee brothers and sisters adjust and find happiness, I wouldn't wish the experience I went through on anyone." Our latest blog features Tony, a Cambodian father and husband who lived in the U.S. for nearly 40 years before facing deportation in 2019. His story speaks to an unforgiving immigration system that tears families apart and shatters lives and how support can be found through solidarity, community, and hope.
