Our team had an incredible time at #SASHTO2024 in Rogers, Arkansas! This summer I had the opportunity to intern with Neel-Schaffer, Inc. gaining hands-on experience across various civil engineering disciplines, including Transportation, Structural, Hydraulics/Hydrology, and Water/Wastewater Engineering. During my internship, I rotated between each discipline, working closely with experienced engineers and contributing to key projects. Transportation Engineering: I was responsible for modifying plans using OpenRoads and assisted with project management at the Bruce Campbell Field Airport in Madison, MS, under the guidance of an Assistant Project Manager. Structural Engineering: I learned to load rate bridges and participated in bridge inspections across Mississippi, gaining valuable insight into structural assessment and safety. Hydraulics/Hydrology: I served as a team lead in charge of completing field data collection in the City of Moss Point. I supported the project by completing a condition assessment and physical measurements of every curb inlet, grate, sewer manhole, ditch, driveway drain, and cross drain in my assigned area. Data was collected using an iPad with an ArcGIS Field Form that can sync data on the fly to the ArcGIS online portal. At the end of the project every visible drainage structure in the entire City of Moss Point was mapped to support the next phase of survey and numerical subsurface modeling. Water and Wastewater Engineering: I visited job sites to take measurements and supported the engineer in making design improvements for ongoing projects. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Neel-Schaffer, Inc. for giving me this amazing opportunity. This experience provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the practical applications of Civil Engineering and I am excited to continue building on these experiences as I advance in my career.
