"You gave me my life back." That was the message Dr. Richard Sacra had for the team who cared for him when Ebola nearly took his life ten years ago. Sacra was the first patient to be treated at the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and the third American to be treated for Ebola on U.S. soil during an outbreak that took place in Western Africa in late 2014. Sacra came back to Omaha for an event marking 10 years since his treatment, even visiting the room where he spent three weeks recovering. The reception also recognized the contributions of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit team for their accomplishments over the last decade. The team has performed vast amounts of research and provided education to health care professionals across the country and around the world—endeavors which continue to put the team at the forefront of global biopreparedness. You can watch news coverage of Sacra's visit and the event at these links: KETV - https://bit.ly/3ZANBYS WOWT- https://bit.ly/4gL6EpB

“Receiving this award means a lot to me, but what means the most is seeing these patients leave the hospital beating cancer’s butt. That’s what’s important to me.” Meet this year's Nebraska Medicine Caring Kind Award winner: Juaquin "Jay" Manzanares. Jay, a senior associate for patient care areas for Environmental Services, is known for going out of his way for the bone marrow transplant patients and the team of the Special Care Unit of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. For example, every Friday, Jay gifts a stuffed animal to a patient he feels has had the most difficult week. He knows their favorite animal, because he takes the time to get to know each patient. Every year, staff members from across the organization nominate their outstanding colleagues for the Caring Kind Award. Senior leaders surprised Jay with the news last week. You can watch the announcement here: https://bit.ly/4eAflB5 Thank you, Jay, for the extraordinary care you show our patients and their families each day!

Karen Bohnenkamp remembers growing up in Midtown Omaha, looking Nebraska Medical Center, and thinking to herself ‘I’d really like to work there one day.’ It took her a bit to find her home at Nebraska Medicine, but once she did, she never left. As she marks her 30th service anniversary with the organization, she’s also retiring Friday from a career spent helping patients understand and gain access to their medications. “It’s about helping people and serving our patients,” she says. “My heart lies in serving others.” She made her decision to retire this past spring. “I really wanted to achieve my 30th service anniversary,” she says. “But I also know a lot of people who didn’t get to enjoy their retirement. It just all fell into place.” She and her husband, Mark, recently bought a camper and look forward to visiting their favorite spots in Yankton, South Dakota, Beatrice, Nebraska, and a few in north central Kansas. “Karen’s role has had a huge impact on our patients and our department overall,” says Kaitlyn Stewart, PharmD, supervisor, HUB Pharmacy. “She never says ‘no’ to helping one of her team members or our patients. She shows a great amount of empathy and healing toward our patients who need help understanding their coverage or who may be going through a difficult time. Congratulations to Karen for her long career here and we wish her the best in retirement!” “I’m excited,” she says. “I’m ready for this life change and creating a new routine. I’m looking forward to spending more time at home, taking a deep breath, relaxing and enjoying my life.”
