Transforming environmental science. Accelerating discovery. Generating solutions.
About us
The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UC Santa Barbara is a center for transformational science focused on accelerating discoveries in environmental science and informing solutions that will allow people and nature to thrive. Founded in 1995, we were the first synthesis science center of its kind, and we continue to lead in the practice of analyzing existing data through collaboration and open science.

Do you use or produce Earth Science Information, such as satellite images, other remote sensing data, maps, or models? If you answered YES, please take this 𝟭𝟬-𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗜). CONVEI is a five-year collaborative program of NASA, NOAA, and USGS, led by the World Wildlife Fund, that aims to improve understanding and awareness of the values of Earth Science Information in decision-making contexts. As advances in Earth Observing technologies continue to revolutionize decision-making, understanding the real-world impact of ESI is more critical than ever. The survey is voluntary and takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and your insight will be critical in shaping the future of CONVEI’s strategies. Looking for a way to write more simply about a very big idea? Check out this page which will only let you write the ten-hundred most simple words, made by Randall Munroe, the 𝘹𝘬𝘤𝘥 comic maker and writer of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘳. This can be a great way to catch words that may be too strange for the people you want to write for or talk to, and to get you to think about other ways to say what you mean. It may be harder than you think! Here's an explainer from our writer, Amelia Liberatore: I write words about people who study the world through big sets of information. These sets of information can be photos of the Earth. They can also be numbers that explain something about the Earth. They can also be points on a map. These photos, numbers, and points can share information about the Earth and how it changes over time, or how changes might be different between different places. When taken together, these big sets of information can be used to answer questions about how humans change the Earth and how animals or other living things are doing. I love to write words about these people's work because I get to learn something new each day, and turning big words into more simple words is fun! Try it out and share a bit about yourself and your work below! https://lnkd.in/gHkhZ33f

The Morpho Initiative - our most broad applied environmental science program - is growing! We are so excited to welcome two new working groups to the fold. 🦈 One group seeks to understand whether global shark and ray meat trade drives unsustainable fisheries. 💊 Another group is tackling a decades-old mystery... what is causing thaimine (vitamin B1) deficiency in aquatic environments? Read more about their approach to applied synthesis science here: https://lnkd.in/g24f6eTY
