We’re proud to announce that Colman Dock, Seattle’s premier ferry terminal, wins a 2024 Engineering News-Record Northwest Best Project Award in the Best Airport/Transit category! The awards recognize projects that contribute to the industry and community and are evaluated on safety, construction, design quality and the project team's ability to overcome challenges. The Colman Dock project redefines a key piece of infrastructure as a literal link between communities with a new entry building, retail, public spaces and elevated walkway that reimagine this flagship transportation hub as an engaging pedestrian experience. Orchids, dandelions, tulips—when it comes to the workplace, which flower are you? Though we all work in unique ways and require different surrounds to be productive, certain conditions—like spaces that allow us to focus and support executive functioning skills—enable us to perform our best. That’s where the concept of “Orchids, Dandelions and Tulips” comes in. While the term was originally popularized by psychologists to explain different personality types, we worked with NBBJ Fellow Dr. John Medina to apply this concept to the workplace for the first time. Here, NBBJ's Ashlie Fuller, Matthew Somerton and Sarah Y. Steen explain how to design for orchids, who need quiet, personalized zones to focus; dandelions, who can work well anywhere; and tulips, who require a balance of open and private areas. https://lnkd.in/gR3Pv_h5

How delightful is your workplace? While cost per square foot remains a critical real estate metric, delight can also be measured to provide a more holistic look at the impact of your office. That’s why we created the Delight Factor, a quantitative analysis tool that scores a building on how it makes people feel. In CoreNet Global’s “The Source” newsletter, NBBJ’s Ryan Mullenix and andrea vanecko explain the four main contributors to the Delight Factor—nature, daylight, variety and socialization—and put them to the test on a tech client’s office that weaves together work, retail, and public spaces through an intentionally blurred interior-exterior environment. https://lnkd.in/gTdg9EZW #interiordesign #workplace #publicspaces #design #nbbjdesign

Research shows that calming, supportive environments play a critical role in mental health treatment. That’s why we’re proud to announce that the residential program at the NBBJ-designed Montage Health Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health is now open. With inspiring views of the stunning Monterey, CA, landscape, private rooms, abundant natural light and open spaces with high ceilings, the 16-bed residential program creates a welcoming embrace inside and out, fostering a sense of comfort reflective of Ohana, a Hawaiian term for "extended family." We’re proud to have participated in Obliteride 2024 with our friends at Fred Hutch and Lease Crutcher Lewis to help fuel life-saving cancer research. NBBJ’ers walked, ran, cycled and volunteered, joining in the effort to #curecancerfaster!
It’s truly remarkable what happens when our community — riders, walkers, runners, volunteers, sponsors and more — comes together to help #curecancerfaster. Thank YOU for making Obliteride 2024 an event to remember! #fredhutch #obliteride #seattle #fundraiser #bike #walk #run #cancerresearch #cancertreatment

Have you ever looked at the Amazon Spheres and thought, “How did they build that?” Well, here’s your chance to find out. Tune into the new season of “How Did They Build That” on Paramount+ and Smithsonian Channel to learn how ingenuity meets engineering in The Spheres. The centerpiece of Amazon’s headquarters, The Spheres are a multi-story, glass-enclosed workplace containing tens of thousands of plants from around the world, designed to help Amazon employees work and feel their best. NBBJ architect John Savo explains how design computation helped generate The Spheres, each a pentagonal hexecontahedron (say that five times fast!) formed by tessellating a pentagon across its surface. Algorithms enable the team to quickly generate a steel-and-glass structure that could be constructed efficiently and cost-effectively, while prefabricating the primary structural steel components and assembling on-site helped maintain safety and quality control. While not everyone can build a workplace like The Spheres, we can all learn from the strategies behind their design. Check out the trailer here and tune in on Wednesday at 8pm ET/PT for the full episode: Sellen Construction I Magnusson Klemencic Associates #amazonspheres #architecture #engineering #workplacedesign #nbbjdesign

Deer, fox and rabbits...oh, my! This week, our Loma Land project—an immersive welcome experience at Loma Linda University Medical Center—surpassed the creation of 75,000 animals since opening. That’s more than 250 animals per day! Loma Land greets young patients with an idyllic forest of animated creatures, rustling plants and the gentle sounds of flowing water. The digital experience allows children to choose from a variety of animals, customize them with unique colors and accessories, interact with them and then release them into the “wild” to play. Which animal is the most popular? The cuddly bear comes in first, with deer, fox, rabbit and raccoon following close behind. https://lnkd.in/gnN_QGp2 NBBJ | ESI Design #healthcare #healthcaredesign #experiencedesign #lomaland #esidesign #nbbjdesign

With the 2024 summer Olympics behind us, we're looking forward to the 2028 games in Los Angeles, CA. Instead of building primarily new venues, events will be hosted across the city’s numerous existing sports venues, arenas and conference centers—including the NBBJ-designed Crypto.com arena. A Los Angeles icon, the arena (formerly known as Staples Center) departs from the traditional arena box shape with an oval inside bowl enveloped by a circular plaza to accommodate various public uses. In keeping with its “flexible” design—the venue is home to multiple professional sports franchises as well as numerous concerts, events and award ceremonies—the arena will host the gymnastics events in 2028. An estimated 20% of the population identifies as neurodivergent. Yet the spaces where we live and work rarely consider the needs and preferences of neurodiverse individuals. However, as awareness around how people with autism, dyslexia, ADHD and other conditions see the world increases, architects are focused on designing spaces that accommodate a range of physical and mental abilities. In the South China Morning Post SCMP, NBBJ Partner Jonathan Ward and Principal Philip Schmunk discuss designing for inclusivity through the lens of the Lower School campus of California’s Westmark School, which serves students with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. “You’re changing the way you think about buildings by thinking about an inclusive process and equity for all,” says Ward. Adds Schmunk, “We thought about the whole campus as a classroom. Learning happens all across the campus.” https://lnkd.in/gkbvPMNU 📷 Ty Cole #education #schooldesign #inclusivity #neurodiversity #nbbjdesign
