⭐ On Oct. 31, 1972, Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Thornton was on a mission near an enemy naval base in Vietnam. Under heavy fire, the patrol retreated, but Thornton learned his senior officer was injured and presumed dead in the jungle. Refusing to abandon him, Thornton sprinted back, found the severely injured lieutenant, carried him to the water, and towed him for nearly two hours before rescue. True heroism. 💪 Michael E. Thornton was awarded a Medal of Honor for these actions which embody the U.S. Navy SEAL Ethos: “I will never quit. I persevere and thrive on adversity. My Nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission.” (Entire SEAL Ethos: https://lnkd.in/gvwmCShi) #MOH #USSOCOM #NavySEALs #NavySWCC #Teamwork #NSW #Leadership #Courage

⭐ NSW honors Chief Petty Officer James Elliott Williams, the most decorated enlisted Sailor in U.S. Navy history. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism on October 31, 1966, during the Vietnam War. While commanding River Patrol Boat 105 in the Mekong Delta, Williams' leadership and bravery in a fierce battle led to the destruction of numerous enemy vessels and inflicted heavy casualties on the Viet Cong forces. Here's an excerpt from the SWCC Creed in his memory: “I am ready for war. I will close and engage the enemy with the full combat power of my craft. My actions will be decisive yet measured. I will always complete the mission. I will never quit, and I will leave no one behind.” ⚡ To read entire SWCC Creed visit: https://lnkd.in/g3Mdtwg4 #MOH #USSOCOM #NavySWCC #NavySEALs #Teamwork #NSW #Leadership

"Skalski’s achievements as a Navy SEAL and commander through multiple conflicts over his near 40-year career bring a distinct operational focus to his tenure as NPS Dean of Students. In addition, Skalski’s time in service makes him the SEAL community’s “Bull Frog,” a title given to their to longest serving active-duty member. “The opportunity to serve here at Naval Postgraduate School is truly a gift and an opportunity,” Skalski said. “There are many challenges ahead … I’ve seen the power of teamwork and resilience during my career. I know that with the talent and dedication in this room and across the NPS campus, we can turn these challenges into opportunities.”"
The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) welcomed U.S. Navy Capt. Eric Skalski as the institution’s new Dean of Students and Commanding Officer of the Student Military Element during a ceremony, Oct. 10, relieving U.S. Navy Capt. Thor Martinsen, Ph.D., an NPS alumnus and current permanent military professor. Martinsen, a Fulbright scholar and NPS Department of Applied Mathematics associate professor, was asked to step-in as Dean of Students over the last year to fill a critical gap. He will now return to teaching, in addition to his new duties as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. “For me, it is hard to put into words just how rewarding it is to see our warrior scholar students grow academically,” Martinsen said. “If ever there was a doubt as to how this country will respond to the myriad of challenges we currently face, one need only look to the skill, strength, and motivation of these young leaders to know that we will be alright.” Skalski’s achievements as a Navy SEAL and commander through multiple conflicts over his near 40-year career bring a distinct operational focus to his tenure as NPS Dean of Students.
