The craft non-alcoholic sector continues to show signs of maturity, both in terms of investments being made, but also in money being spent to stand up new brands, or sponsorships in one of the major North American sports leagues. While Athletic Brewing Co. has typically been the first pure-play in these areas, other craft brands are stepping up as well. It got us thinking about the state of investment in the non-alcoholic sector, focusing on three very recent October announcements in NA beer - the launch of BERO Brewing by Hollywood A-lister, Tom Holland; Best Day Brewing's 2024 investment haul news; and Hedlum Brewing's official sponsorship with the NHL's New Jersey Devils. With the typically-busy Dry January period still a couple of months away, we can likely expect there's more where this came from. What happens when two sustainability stalwarts like Patagonia and Deschutes Brewery combine efforts? The first USDA-certified, organic non-alcoholic beer, of course! One of the more exciting NA beer launches of the year, the Kernza Golden NA, along with its full-alcohol counterpart, the Kernza Lager, is made from (and named for) the perennial grain that improves soil health. No different than in any other industry, promoting sustainable methods in beer making is really important, and kudos to both of these socially-responsible companies for taking a lead position (and yes, the beer is really good, too!). New data on the growth of #nonalcoholic beer relative to full-strength beer is very enlightening, both in terms of the growth trajectory, as well as where NA beer appears to be strongest....hint, it's in states where you might need a jacket right now (thank you Marcos Salazar 🍺🍷🥃 and Ted Fleming, among others, for sharing this today). 👀🍺
CEO, Adult Non-Alcoholic Beverage Association | Writing about entrepreneurship and my work in changing the way the world drinks.
🚀 #Nonalcoholic beer continues to GROW and GROW in the US at a 22% volume CAGR from 2019 to 2023, according to recent data by IWSR. It has also more than DOUBLED from a 0.5% volume share of total beer to 1.2%. A few other interesting stats is that NA beer is strongest in the northern states. Every state has seen strong growth but, the biggest share growth has skewed towards the NE and NW of the US: 🍺 Maryland and Massachusetts both went from 1% share of total beer to 4%, growing at 49% and 39% (volume CAGR ’19-’23) respectively. 🍺 Massachusetts is the 22nd biggest beer drinking state in the US but the 3rd biggest non-alcoholic beer drinking state, and Maryland the 26th biggest beer state but 8th biggest non-alcoholic beer state. 🍺 Connecticut non-alcoholic share of beer went from 1% to 3%. New Jersey, Washington and Oregon all doubled their non-alcoholic beer share going from 1% to 2%. “What is interesting about this regional trend is that as northern states, they have more moderate climates that don’t traditionally lend themselves to over-indexing on beer consumption due to longer cold seasons,” observes Marten Lodewijks, President of IWSR’s US Division. “That would suggest the bigger driver of this growth is underlying consumer preference and not just a switch from full-strength to non-alcoholic beer during the hot summer months.” You can also see in the chart below there is more consistent growth of non-alcoholic beer throughout the year vs. a lot of volatility for full-strength beer. You can read more insights from the link in the comments. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ♻️ #Repost if you like this content and follow me, Marcos Salazar 🍺🍷🥃 , for more content like this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ cc: Bill Paugh

Recent studies have shown that daily cannabis use has surpassed daily alcohol use, a trend that seems even more pronounced in the increasingly-important Gen Z demographic. In our newest U.S. of NA podcast episode, we dive into the expanding world of canna beverages. Our guest is Lehua Brands CEO Sierra Elaina, herself an experienced beverage executive who has worked for, and alongside, some of the biggest brands in alcohol prior to her current role leading a house of brands in the cannabis space. In our conversation we chat about the transitional time the industry finds itself in, the parallels with the broader non-alcoholic sector, and finally, where she envisions future consumers to be able to find and enjoy their products once a murky regulatory environment is sorted out. To listen, find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, or at the link in the comments below. #nonalcoholicdrinks #cannabis #cannabisbeverages #podcasts

In the latest episode of U.S. of N/A, we talk with a true legend in the craft beer industry. Nearly 25 years before he would start Ceria Brewing Company in Arvada, Colorado, Keith Villa launched Blue Moon Brewing Company for MillerCoors, and with it a brand that would help usher in a new era of craft beer in the U.S. He's continued to be a trailblazer in the category ever since, with his Ceria Brewing believed to make the only completely zero-proof beer that is brewed inside the country. To give our wide-ranging conversation a listen, find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, or wherever you choose to podcast-imbibe. Some really good insights from Go Brewing Founder Joe Chura on their experience as a #nonalcoholic brand sponsoring a weekend music festival.
Founder of Go Brewing. Passionate about human potential, entrepreneurship, DTC, & the non-alcoholic movement.
Takeaways from an NA brand Sponsoring a Major Music Festival: Lessons from Riot Fest Background: Last weekend, Go Brewing had the exciting opportunity to be the official non-alcoholic beer sponsor at Riot Fest, a three-day, action-packed music festival in Chicago. With headliners like Public Enemy, Beck, and Slayer, the fest drew around 50,000 attendees each day. What Went Right: - Widespread Availability: Our beer was served at every bar across the festival, and the Riot Fest team made sure it was easy to find, giving us maximum exposure. - Draft Beer Success: We brought draft NA beer to our activation, and it was a huge hit. We ran out of stock early on Day 2 and had to scramble to restock! Our New School Sour was the unexpected fan favorite, beating out the other two styles we offered. Draft beer really made a difference for us. - Blind Taste Test Challenge: We hosted a blind taste test where attendees sampled two beers—one alcoholic (not ours) and one of ours—and had to guess which one had alcohol. To participate, they had to fill out a form, and we ended up collecting nearly 1,000 emails, providing a great follow-up opportunity with festival-goers. - Engaging Activation: Our space featured fun games and a tent that gave people shelter from the rain, turning our area into a little festival hub where attendees could hang out and relax. What We’d Do Differently: - Merchandise Sales: We anticipated strong merch sales based on stories from other iconic Chicago brands like Mallort, whose cult status and connection to the city always make their merch a hit. However, despite our fresh designs, merch sales were lackluster. Many attendees were trying our brand for the first time, so the connection to our merch was premature. - Lighting Misstep: During the day, our black tent was super visible, but by Friday night, we disappeared into the darkness. On Saturday morning, I made a run to Home Depot, armed with my suburban dad credit card, to grab lights and fix the issue. Lesson learned: we need to stand out both day and night! - More Staffing: Our team is small but mighty, and after setting up and running three days of non-stop activities, everyone was exhausted. We didn’t bring in extra help, so teardown was rough. Next time, we’ll bring in more support so the crew isn’t running on fumes by the end. Overall, it was a blast packed with lessons—and plenty of unforgettable moments! Thank you to everyone who stopped by and especially to our team for your incredible efforts and non-stop energy.

Our latest review is from Naperville, Illinois' Go Brewing, who as many know has quickly become a significant player in the non-alcoholic beer category. As they gain further distribution in new states across the U.S., a staple of that distributed portfolio continues to be Not Just Another Story, their double IPA that originated from a conversation between Go co-founder Joe Chura and Robert Theodorow of Lafayette, Indiana's Generation NA. The rest is (NA) beer history. For our full review, we've dropped a link in the comments. Perhaps there's still time to pick some up before the weekend? #cheers #nonalcoholicdrinks #beverageindustry #breweries

There's so much excitement for what's still ahead in the #nonalcoholic category. We're only getting started! We can't think of a better guest than Zero Proof Nation's Laura Silverman to dive into not just what's ahead for NA, but how we got to this point. In our conversation we talk about how advocacy has evolved in an industry's that far more mainstream than just a couple of years ago, the explosive growth and myriad new brands that have popped up, Laura's views on the titles and jargon used to describe non-alc, and lastly, some of her current, personal faves. To listen, find the U.S. of N/A on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, or whatever audio platform you prefer. You can also find the link in the comments below. In the meantime, here's a clip from the episode of Laura talking about her concern for smaller, "indie" brands fighting for market share. #nonalcoholic #beverageindustry
