Our Vision: A World Without Headache
About us
For over 50 years, our mission at the National Headache Foundation has been to further awareness of headache and migraine as legitimate neurobiological diseases. With aid from advanced technology and clinical innovation, there are more care and treatment options than ever before. NHF understands that these diseases are still largely misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. Additionally, the personal and societal burdens of pain, disability, diminished quality of life and financial cost is under-recognized. We are honored to have you on this journey, as there is so much we can do together.

Today, on Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day, we are honored to share the amazing story of Anna Williams. We believe that sharing stories like hers is a powerful way to raise awareness and bring communities together. "I've never had dental pain before. I've had migraine attacks. When I started having pain, it was like migraine, but it was in my bottom right teeth. Every time I'd accidentally bite on food on that side, I'd get severe pain jolting through my teeth and then my teeth would have an intense boring feeling for hours to days. I was scared to go to the dentist, but I finally did when the pain went on for a couple of months. I did have a superficial filling that needed to be fixed, but the pain didn't go away. After three more visits over 4 months, and realizing the filling wasn't fixing the issue, I accepted that my tooth needed to be pulled. But the dentist couldn't figure out which tooth and neither could I. He said he couldn't extract a healthy tooth and it wasn't a single tooth causing the pain. At this point, he said he thought it was neurological. Finding medications I was not allergic to and ones I could tolerate was a difficult experience, leading me to go without treatment options for many months. Not only did I have Classical Trigeminal Neuralgia with concomitant continuous pain (TN2), but 8 months after my initial pain began, I developed the same type of pain on my left side. This left me in a rare group of people with the trigeminal neuralgia diagnosis, but it was my reality despite that rarity. Experiencing pain when I spoke, ate, brushed my teeth, and even being outside when the wind was blowing was beyond devastating. It has taken me a long time, but working with my doctors has found things that work for me." #trigeminalneuralgia #headachecommunity #HealthAdvocacy
