I recently joined some of my BlueCross colleagues (Dalya Qualls White, Ed.D., Kevin Woods and Jacob Moore, pictured here) and Dr. Russell Wigginton of the National Civil Rights Museum for a construction tour. The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation is investing $9.6 million to create the BlueCross Healthy Place at Founders Park, across from the historic Lorraine Motel building that serves as the museum's centerpiece. #OnThisDay in 1956, the Tennessee National Guard was sent to Clinton, TN to end mob violence attempting to stop integration of Black students into schools. This was just one of the numerous occasions when federal law enforcement intervened to suppress white mobs resisting and attempting to hinder desegregation, as state and local law enforcement had failed to step in. Despite the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling that outlawed segregation in schools, its effects are still seen today.

It was an honor to see Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Memphis this weekend and especially touching to have him visit the National Civil Rights Museum, which is doing critical work to advance equality and opportunity all over the world. The relationship between our two countries continues to grow in importance, and we are proud to help foster the economic and cultural bridge that has already benefited so many.
