Last week, NSF NCAR Director Everette Joseph visited Howard University to participate in a celebration commemorating 20 years of partnership between NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and Howard. As part of the celebration, he was able to see upgrades to Howard’s UrbanNet observing station, part of the UrbanNet research program established by NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory. It’s one of four stations situated in and around Washington, D.C. to measure heat stress, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, and precipitation in urban environments. He also had the chance to express gratitude for two NOAA programs that have been instrumental in increasing participation of students from underrepresented communities in the atmospheric, oceanic, and environmental sciences: the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Science and Meteorology (NCAS) and the José E. Serrano Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions. Thank you for hosting such a wonderful event, Howard University and NOAA! 📸1 &3 : NOAA

After taking near-daily measurements of the Sun’s global coronal magnetic field (say that three times fast), scientists have a brighter picture of this elusive region and the processes that drive solar storms. ☀️ Solar storms can interfere with vital Earth-bound technology, so better understanding the Sun can help life on our planet. NSF NCAR High Altitude Observatory (HAO) scientists and their research team used a combination of coronal seismology and Upgraded Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (UCoMP) observations to produce consistent and comprehensive views of the magnetic field of the Sun, similar to what is seen during an eclipse. #GradStudent Opportunity! 📢 The NSF NCAR Advanced Study Program (ASP) is now accepting applications from graduate students for the 2025 Graduate Visitor Program. The ASP Graduate Visitor Program (GVP) is an excellent way for graduate students to connect with NSF NCAR scientists and engineers to receive guidance on their thesis or final project equivalent, along with professional development opportunities. Please note, a nomination from an NSF NCAR scientist as sponsor/host is required along with the graduate student application to be considered. The graduate student application deadline for the GVP is November 1, 2024. The host nomination deadline for NSF NCAR scientists and engineers is November 6, 2024. After a scorching summer, our Climate Data Guide has a few new updates to shed light on the recent high temperatures. 🌡 The NSF NCAR Climate Data Guide has one new dataset, DCENT, and one updated page, NASA GISTEMP, detailing the data used to quantify the Earth's temperature. GISTEMP's recent update shows that this past summer experienced temperature anomalies greater than 1.5 °C! Here’s a handy breakdown: - DCENT: The first new major assessment of global temperature in a decade that provides the most accurate estimates of temperature anomalies to date.
