Join us THIS Friday as the National Building Museum honors Walter as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Vincent Scully Prize! The Vincent Scully Prize, established in 1999, recognizes exemplary practice, scholarship or criticism in architecture, historic preservation and urban design. It is named for the esteemed professor, and the award’s first recipient, who inspired generations across the building disciplines. Scully was the Sterling Professor Emeritus of the History of Art at Yale University and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Miami. For more than four decades his teaching and scholarship have profoundly influenced prominent architects, urban planners, and others. We hope to see you there for this special evening. tickets here: https://lnkd.in/gyHgbNDD

Walter Hood, landscape designer, artist, and educator, has won this year's Vincent Scully Prize. Hood is the creative director and founder of Hood Design Studio a social art and design practice based in Oakland, California. Hood’s work seeks to uncover and strengthen layers of meaning present in all landscapes – ecological, cultural, contemporary and historic. Notable projects include the large-scale garden designs of the International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, South Carolina; the Oakland Museum of California, the M. H. de Young Museum in San Francisco; and the recently opened Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing Park in Jacksonville, Florida. Register for the award presentation and cocktail reception at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. on Friday, October 4 from 6-8 PM. The awards ceremony coincides with the first night of the #ASLA2024 Conference on Landscape Architecture in Washington, D.C. https://lnkd.in/grBa7Fz Tickets are $50 for adults and $20 for students: https://bit.ly/47OL5jE Image Credit: International African American Museum / Esto/Sahar Coston-Hardy; Oakland Museum of California / Caitlin Atkinson; John Robinson Jr. Town Square; Arlington, VA / David Ross; Walter Hood, landscape designer / Adrienne Eberhardt

On October 15, join us for a compelling discussion with Elizabeth J. Kennedy, RLA FASLA, landscape architect and Design Trust for Public Space Research Fellow, as she delves into the complexities of designing “tough sites”—places rich with culturally charged and contested histories. Kennedy will share insights from her ongoing projects and how contemporary design can honor narratives of displacement and cultural heritage. Following her lecture, she will be joined by cultural consultant Peggy King Jorde and architect Rodney Leon, collaborators on the African Burial Ground National Monument, for an engaging conversation on spatial reclamation and the intersection of design and social justice. Presented in partnership with Garden and Landscape Studies at @DumbartonOaks, this program invites a deeper exploration of place, memory, and identity through landscape architecture.
