Founded in 1992 by NBA Legends Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, Archie Clark, Dave Cowens and Oscar Robertson, the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) is a non-profit association comprised of former professional basketball players of the NBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotters. We are the only alumni association of its kind supported directly by the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). The National Basketball Retired Players Association is a charitable 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a two-pronged mission to assist former NBA, ABA, Harlem Globetrotters and WNBA players in their transition from the playing court into life after the game, while also positively impacting communities and youth through basketball. What an honor it was to represent Google's Beyond Sports program at the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) Legends Summer Getaway in Las Vegas! 🏀 Connecting with over 300 incredible former NBA, WNBA, and Harlem Globetrotters athletes was truly inspiring. We explored how Google tools can empower their next chapters – from launching businesses to pursuing new careers and giving back to their communities. A few highlights: ⚫ Tech demos: Showcasing the power of Labs.google and Gemini AI's capabilities. ⚫ Small business support: Connecting entrepreneurs with expert advice from Google Small Business Advisors. ⚫ Career pathways: Introducing athletes to the transformative Grow with Google Career Certificates. ⚫ Community impact: Exploring tech-powered partnerships to amplify youth development initiatives. Beyond the fun of shooting hoops with the legendary AC Green (who definitely showed me a thing or two about free throws!), the true highlight was the chance to connect with so many incredible athletes and leaders in the sports industry. This event solidified my passion for working where sports, technology, and equity meet. I'm especially excited to be co-leading Beyond Sports' expansion into the collegiate space, working to empower current and former student-athletes with the tools and resources they need to succeed on and off the field. Huge shoutout to Malar Patel for building such strong relationships and for creating this incredible opportunity! Things didn’t look like this 20-30 years ago…When you were done, you were lost. In 2024, the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) has programs to literally save lives, transition management, resources for anything and everything that we may need our 1st day out. The biggest reason of its success is players helping players. We are the only ones that know what you go through when you leave…the mental piece that some times takes years just to figure out where the 1st puzzle piece goes. Scott Rochelle and his team have done an amazing job. Excited for my first Getaway…The new driver & new putting grip fresh off the RMC Pro-Am will be on display…hopefully it’s an early tee time before the 🌞
