As we celebrate our 80th anniversary with a look back on some of our most memorable milestones, we hope you have enjoyed our journey through time over the past week. In 2023, Napa Valley Vintners gave $2.1 million for wildfire resiliency in Napa County. These funds went towards Napa Firewise and Napa County Resource Conservation District, who collaborated with local and state government offices to create fire breaks, restore forestlands and educate the community on forest health and wildfires. More recently, our advocacy in Washington D.C. helped secure a $37.5 million federal grant for wildfire fuel reduction and other prevention efforts.

In 2016, Napa Valley Vintners donated $6 million to construct the new OLE Health South Napa facility, which opened in 2019. Over the last 40 years, NVV’s support of OLE totals more than $60 million. This has had a considerable impact on the community, as one in four Napa Valley residents now rely on OLE’s services each year. “NVV was a huge part of the history of our organization, helping us close funding gaps early in our history to remain operational and later helping us to establish a permanent home for our work in Napa,” said Alicia Hardy, CEO of CommuniCare+OLE.

In the early 2000s, NVV established the Napa Green task force. Taking environmental leadership to an even higher level, the Napa Valley Vintners worked with more than 20 industry and environmental stakeholder groups, as well as local, state and federal regulators to help create the Napa Green Certified programs. The Napa Green Certified Land (now known as Certified Vineyard) program launched in 2004, followed by the Napa Green Certified Winery program in 2008. Now its own independent non-profit, Napa Green serves as a catalyst and facilitator to grow certified sustainable, responsible businesses committed to environmental stewardship. This voluntary environmental certification program for Napa County vineyards and wineries is focused on climate action, social equity, resource conservation and enhancing operational efficiency. In 2000, Napa Valley Vintners successfully crafted and advocated for state legislation that requires any brand using the name Napa, or any of the names of appellations wholly contained within Napa County, to qualify at minimum for the Napa County appellation of origin. Shortly after, a lawsuit challenging the new state law was filed. The case made its way through the California court system, with the State Supreme Court ultimately upholding the Napa Name Law in 2005. During that same time, NVV helped to establish the global Wine Origins Alliance, which works collaboratively to ensure wine place names are protected and not abused or miscommunicated to consumers. While we may be competitors in the worldwide marketplace, we all agree that each region is unique and produces wines impossible to duplicate anywhere else. The first Premiere Napa Valley barrel auction was held in 1997 and raised $412,000. Since then, this trade-only wine auction has been held each February to raise funds to directly support NVV programs to promote, protect and enhance Napa Valley. The 29th annual Premiere Napa Valley will be held on February 22, 2025. Premiere Napa Valley wines are some of the rarest and most sought after in the world. These wines are initially offered at auction to restaurants and retailers who then offer the wines to their customers.
