“Lung cancer can be so deadly because by the time it is diagnosed, it is often at an advanced stage,” says Roy Herbst, MD, PhD, a Yale Medicine oncologist and Ensign Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine (YSM). Dr. Herbst also serves as chief of medical oncology, deputy director for Clinical Affairs, and assistant dean for Translational Medicine at YSM, Yale Cancer Center, and Smilow Cancer Hospital. “More than 50% of the time, it has already traveled from the lung to another part of the body, which makes it very difficult to treat," he says. But progress in treatment options is providing some patients with new avenues, which could eventually change the prognosis for many. https://lnkd.in/gcGCqNf6

"The chemical messenger dopamine is an essential catalyst that fuels activities and behaviors ranging from movement to cognition and learning. However, neuroscientists have long debated whether these functions rely on rapid bursts of dopamine or on the neurochemical’s slower action. A new study led by researchers at Harvard Medical School provides an answer." https://lnkd.in/ePAVNscR

"Scientists at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA(Link is external) have developed a first-of-its-kind experimental therapy that has the potential to enhance heart repair following a heart attack, preventing the onset of heart failure. Cardiovascular disease continues to be the world’s leading cause of death, contributing to one-third of deaths annually. After a heart attack, the heart’s innate ability to regenerate is limited, causing the muscle to develop scars to maintain its structural integrity. This inflexible scar tissue, however, interferes with the heart’s ability to pump blood, leading to heart failure in many patients — 50% of whom(Link is external) do not survive beyond five years. The need for innovative therapies is urgent. The new therapeutic approach aims to improve heart function after a heart attack by blocking a protein called ENPP1, which is responsible for increasing the inflammation and scar tissue formation that exacerbate heart damage. The findings, published in Cell Reports Medicine(Link is external), could represent a major advance in post-heart attack treatment." https://lnkd.in/eaM_4GaC
