🌟 Class 3 of 4 Complete! Big I New York Continuing Education Series 🌟 Yesterday, independent insurance agents across New York and Connecticut tuned in for our third session of four, diving into often-overlooked compliance essentials within agencies. Our CEO and Registered NY DFS Instructor, Walter C., highlighted the importance of multifactor authentication, IT vetting, and third-party provider scrutiny — all crucial steps to strengthen agency security. The feedback from attending agents has been fantastic. Many are feeling like these classes have been eye-openers. This series is about more than education and credits; it’s about reshaping mindsets and equipping agencies for resilience. 🔹 Class 1: The Double-Edged Sword of AI in Insurance AI has the potential to revolutionize workflows, improve claims processing, and elevate client service. Yet, with these advancements come hidden compliance risks, especially concerning sensitive data. Walter guided agencies on safe AI practices, such as using it internally for meeting summaries, report drafts, and disaster planning—all sparking vital conversations on balancing efficiency with privacy. 🔹Class 2: The Rising Demand—and Risks—of Hiring Virtual Assistants Virtual Assistants (VAs) offer valuable support, but without due diligence, they can introduce significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Walter shared a clear action plan for hiring VAs, from cybersecurity standards vetting to defining task boundaries and conducting rigorous contract reviews. This session empowered agency owners to make informed hiring choices and build more secure VA partnerships. 🔹Class 3: Unpacking Overlooked Cybersecurity and Compliance Essentials Agencies are Often Missing Cybersecurity is often overlooked in smaller agencies, leading to vulnerabilities. We highlighted crucial practices, such as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and thorough third-party IT vetting. Walter emphasized the risks of “blind trust” in IT vendors, advocating for agency-led audits and continuous compliance evaluations—giving agents a comprehensive toolkit to reinforce their cybersecurity. 🔹 Coming Up Next Wednesday Nov 6th - Class 4: NY DFS Your SuperHERO, Not Villain We’re excited to shift perspectives on NY DFS cybersecurity requirements, turning these compliance items into a friendly ally for your agency’s security. Walter will break down a real agency cybersecurity risk assessment to reveal where hidden vulnerabilities often lie. Standard spam filters aren’t enough to block advanced phishing emails. Use advanced email filters that can learn from new phishing tactics and improve over time. Regularly review their performance to stay ahead of cyber threats. Why it’s important: Basic spam filters might catch obvious phishing attempts, but hackers are getting smarter. Small businesses often rely on default settings, assuming they’re protected, but this can leave them vulnerable to more sophisticated attacks. Advanced email filtering systems use machine learning to analyze email patterns, spot new phishing tactics, and adapt as threats evolve. Regularly reviewing their effectiveness ensures that your company is prepared for even the most advanced phishing emails. Action Step: Work with your IT provider to set up advanced email filters and make sure they are fine-tuned to catch the latest threats. Schedule regular performance reviews to ensure the filters are working effectively, and update them as needed to stay ahead of evolving phishing tactics. Zero trust means never assuming that anyone or anything trying to access your systems is safe. Every access request—whether from employees, clients, or applications—needs to be verified. This extra layer of caution helps keep data safe. Why it’s important: Small businesses often trust employees and internal systems more than they should. But even well-meaning employees can accidentally compromise sensitive data. A zero trust approach ensures that every request for access is verified, reducing the risk of insider threats or mistakes. Action Step: Start by limiting access to sensitive data and require multi-factor authentication for all users. Review who has access to what regularly. No matter how small your team is, zero trust is an essential part of modern cybersecurity.
