This year’s Democratic National Convention has drawn comparisons to the 1968 DNC, which was also held in Chicago. Throwing it back to '68, here's how Morven was connected: At the time, Morven served as the executive mansion for New Jersey Governor Richard Hughes. Hughes was a close ally of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, who, in March 1968, made a surprising announcement that he would not seek a second term. In the lead-up to the Convention, Hughes was chosen as chairman of the Equal Rights Committee and the Convention Credentials Committee. The Hughes family traveled to Chicago to support Richard, and Betty Hughes, NJ’s First Lady, wrote about it in her regular newspaper column, giving details on her family logistics, hosting luncheons, and a few notes on the fashion of other politicians' wives. Vice President Hubert Humphrey was chosen as the party’s candidate for the presidential race. While Hughes was named as a possible running mate, Maine Senator Edmund Muskie was ultimately selected; Hughes’ work in the Credential Committee would go on to help reform the Democratic party.
