About us
The Mortenson Center in Global Engineering & Resilience at the University of Colorado Boulder combines education, research, and partnerships to improve development tools and practice. We train engineers to recognize the issues at the core of development challenges, and collaborate with partners across the CU Boulder and the world to create sustainable, scalable, evidence-based and multidisciplinary solutions to global development problems. Our program provides multiple pathways for engineers to enter the field of global engineering. The Mortenson Center promotes the role and skills of engineers in identifying and addressing the unequal and unjust distribution of access to basic services such as water, sanitation, energy, food, transportation and shelter, and places an emphasis on identifying the drivers, determinants and solutions favoring equitable access. Through our curriculum, we: -Introduce students to the historical causes and present conditions of global inequality, and identify the opportunities and limitations of professional engineering engagement. -Empower students and working professionals to engage in a historically contextualized, anti-imperial contribution to global engineering. Identify and promote the relevance and role of the engineering profession in supporting the reduction of poverty and increasing prosperity. -Identify and promote the relevance and role of the engineering profession in supporting the reduction of poverty and increasing prosperity.

How amazing are Mortenson Center students? Read on to find out. Congratulations Frank on your many achievements!
I reached a major personal and professional milestone earlier this year when I completed my professional masters degree in Next Generation Power and Energy Systems (NGPES) at University of Colorado Boulder. The program was focused on developing renewable energy practitioners, grid planners, thought leaders, and system operators for the evolving future of power infrastructure. Many of my professors were affiliated with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and oftentimes coursework covered areas of active research, ahead of textbooks in the field and far beyond my undergraduate coursework 15+ years ago. I also earned a graduate certificate in global engineering from the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering & Resilience which examines the role of engineers in international development and humanitarian work. My electives in this program bolstered my understanding of anti-racism, anti-colonialism, gender equity, social inclusion, and impact evaluation in the context of cross-cultural engineering collaboration. After nearly 2 decades of volunteering with Engineers Without Borders USA and 7 years focused on engineering in the Global South, this coursework resonated deeply. As my career is focused on achieving universal access to modern electricity with climate justice, this academic program was uniquely suited to my work. With the degree complete, I can redouble my efforts to deliver cutting edge engineering solutions in the Global South with accountability and solidarity with communities building their own power through rural electric cooperatives and mini-grids, while informing higher level policy at the national and international level. #SDG7 #energy4all #ItStartsWithPower Special thanks to my wife and my family who made countless sacrifices over the past 3 years including covering for me on many long nights and weekends. Thanks to my employer NRECA International for encouraging this course of study and providing financial support. Thanks also to my advisors Bri-Mathias Hodge and Carlo Salvinelli who helped keep me on track while juggling my coursework. In the process, I met a cohort of wonderful classmates and colleagues who are shaping the future of global energy systems and I'm grateful to be part of it.
