👏 Congratulations to Joe Parker at Caltech! This week, Parker was named a #MacArthurFellow for his exploration of the evolutionary process of symbiosis among rove beetles that coexist with ants. Parker’s research is focused on understanding how symbiosis facilitates the emergence of novel forms and functions for the interacting insects. 🔬 🪲 The Moore Foundation supports a collaboration with Parker and his Caltech colleagues Matt Thompson and Rob Phillips to bring their expertise on symbiosis, synthetic biology and biophysics to the study the origin of eukaryotes. Eukaryotes, which evolved through an aquatic symbiosis almost two billion years ago, are a premier and exceptionally exciting example of the emergence of myriad novel cellular forms and functions. ➡️ See Parker's MacArthur Foundation feature to learn more about his work: https://lnkd.in/gvTcdWta Our Symbiosis in Aquatic Systems Initiative team: Jon Kaye, Adam Jones, Ph.D. Visit moore.org to learn more about our initiative: https://lnkd.in/g7gBXGr

Since our original grant in 2002 to support the transition from pay-for-access research publication system to an open-access system, we have observed the transformation of PLOS as a publisher. With this latest grant and partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation we are excited to see an economic shift to a new approach that facilitates both access to knowledge and participation in knowledge creation by a wider range of researchers. Our lead grantmaker: Adam Jones, Ph.D., Science Program Officer, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. #scienceresearch #openaccess #sciencephilanthropy
We are embarking on a pioneering initiative to address significant barriers in Open Science with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Exciting news! 👏 Moore Foundation grantee Benjamin Van Mooy of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution was named a 2024 MacArthur Fellow. As an oceanographer, Van Mooy investigates how microorganisms shape the cycling of nutrients fundamental to life in marine environments. “Congratulations to Ben on this well-deserved honor! His work has linked microbial communities with ocean elemental cycles in particularly clever ways and with unmatched chemical precision,” said Jon Kaye, program director at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. “As one of his colleagues from graduate school, I can say we all knew he would go far.” ▶️ Benjamin Van Mooy | 2024 MacArthur Fellow: https://lnkd.in/gFmvgYFu #MarineMicrobiology #philanthropy #MooreScience #MacFellow MacArthur Foundation

Our latest Perspective feature calls on the urgent need for cooperation and solidarity to protecting nature. As the lead of our Andes-Amazon Initiative and an anthropologist, Dr. Avecita Chicchon reflects on her experiences with the Asháninka community in the Peruvian Amazon, highlighting how traditional knowledge of climate cues is being disrupted by environmental changes. 🌍 With a call to conserve at least 70% of the Amazon biome, Avecita stresses that effective management and governance are crucial for sustainable outcomes. By fostering collaboration among communities and recognizing the voices of those closest to the land, we can create positive tipping points that lead to innovative solutions for preserving our planet. Let’s work together to ensure a thriving future for both people and nature! 🌱 Read the full perspective on moore.org: https://lnkd.in/gnPjTiJ8 #EnvironmentalConservation #Sustainability #AmazonConservation #IndigenousCommunities #IndigenousKnowledge #philanthropy

🌊🔬 Uncovering the secrets of ocean microbial communities! 🔬🌊 Scientists funded through our Marine Microbiology Initiative, led by Jon Kaye, have endeavored to shed light on the “black box” of the ocean’s microbial world to better understand the key players influencing the marine carbon cycle. A new study by initiative grantees, Benjamin Van Mooy and Roman Stocker, revealed surprising connections between different bacterial species and one of their primary food sources – lipids. These findings suggest the existence of "functional guilds" of bacteria, groups that fulfill the same biogeochemical roles. What was especially groundbreaking was the innovative combination of advanced microfluidics techniques, imaging technologies, traditional bacterial culturing and chemical analysis that enabled the findings. This approach allowed the research team to explore how microbial communities break down and process lipids in the ocean, deepening our understanding of carbon cycling in the marine environment. 📄 Check out the press release from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to learn more or read the full study in Science: Microbial dietary preference and interactions affect the export of lipids to the deep ocean. 🌍🌊 #OceanScience #Microbiology #MarineCarbonCycle #InnovationInScience #Biogeochemistry #philanthropy
