Presented ‘Tech x Pop Culture - building brands that resonate with young people’ at Moonshot by TechCabal. I had a really good time working with my team WeTalkSound & the TechCabal team to curate this session about a topic that I care deeply about. As someone who’s worked at the intersection of tech & culture for a while, I’ve seen a lot of missed opportunities for cross-collaboration and a few instances where brands have gotten it right in this region. I think it can be done much better. Focusing on 3 themes: originality, storytelling and humor, Franklyn "Vader" Ikemefune and I showcased our favorite case studies and illustrations to show brand marketers, creatives and founders how to create holistic marketing campaigns that will connect with young people and help build truly lovable brands. Perhaps my favourite feedback about Moonshot 2024. There's a lot of energy and will in this ecosystem, even it isn't always apparent. We're just getting started. Happy that TechCabal and Moonshot by TechCabal can play a role in keeping that energy up, driving the connections and initiating the conversations to build the future of African tech.
Are the good vibes back? Reporting about African tech over 18 months has felt tedious. The startup showcases and ideas and people at meet-ups and hangouts have felt uninspiring, if not outrightly dull. Aspirants aping the pre-2022 success stories, scraping the bottom pot without spark. OGs muddling through, bank statements blinking red. It is beginning to *feel good again, I think. Moonshot by TechCabal was evidence of not just enthusiasm but actual hunger. Casual observers and paid professionals are convinced many African problems — energy, transportation, commerce, food delivery — can be solved using technology. I agree. Different thinking is needed, away from the FOMO-fueled rush that led to Dash-d dreams. But there is a will for Different, I think, and so there will likely be a way. So here's 🥂 to Tomiwa Aladekomo and Olanrewaju Odunowo (CPSP) and Olumuyiwa Olowogboyega and Fu'ad Lawal. Et al. Thank you. That felt good. Do it again.
