  • CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’: The MLKCH Dream Council—a select circle of leaders working to raise support for MLKCH—recently came together for a gathering focused on advocacy and mission. Kellie Hawkins Davis, Dream Council Chair and partner at EKA, thanked the group for the important work they are doing alongside MLKCH leadership to impact the health and wellness of South LA. The Council and their guests also heard from Bethany Duncan, RN coordinator, and Elsa Zecena, nurse practitioner, from our Street Medicine team about their personal experience working with our community’s most vulnerable populations. Big thanks to everyone on the Dream Council for their commitment to our mission!

  • FILLING THE GAP: We’re thrilled to announce a generous $150,000 grant from @BMO to support our Graduate Medical Education (GME) program. The MLK Internal Medicine Residency Program trains compassionate #physicians to serve our diverse, medically-complex community. #Residency programs like ours are key to recruiting #doctors of color who will serve vulnerable communities. Data show that a majority of physicians practice in the region in which they train, with as high as 40% of them staying within 10 miles of their #residencies. This is especially important in South LA, where there is a physician gap of 1,500. Big thanks to BMO for funding this important program. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gz9DSeaw

  • WHITE COAT: This June, we welcomed our third cohort of #residents to our MLKCH Internal Medicine Residency Program at an annual White Coat Ceremony—an event in which new residents officially begin their career as a #physician. We celebrated the MLKCH way—with food, camaraderie and compelling stories from our residents about why they chose our program. One thing is clear: they all have a heart for our mission of helping the most vulnerable. Please give a warm welcome to MLKCH’s newest #doctors: 🩺 Dr. Adedeji Adefeso 🩺 Dr. Amber Latif 🩺 Dr. Emily Le 🩺 Dr. Priscila Lopez Ramirez 🩺 Dr. Gajaan Sittambalam

  • ROLE MODEL: EVS shift lead Debbie Reyes is big on leading by example. It’s why she was one of the first three people to get the COVID vaccine. It’s why she joined the MLKCH Gives Leadership team. And it’s why she supports the MLKCH Gives campaign every year. She’s seen firsthand the difference it can make, and it’s important to her that her teammates know that you don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse to participate. “It helps to show them that we can all do it.” Learn more about how Debbie came to MLKCH and how funds from MLKCH Gives has supported her career journey: mlkchgives.org #MLKCHGives #EmployeeGiving #philanthropy

  • We did it! Thanks to your incredible support, we received 100 gifts in 48 hours for our MLKCH Gives employee giving campaign. As promised, VP of Ancillary Services, Jonathan Westall, FACHE, showed up to get his hair cut—with Dr. Batchlor as the barber! Big thanks to Efrain Real of the Flawless Barbershop in Lynwood who stepped to complete the look. “It was plain fun and I’m glad Jonathan was a good sport for the cause,” said Dr. B. “And I’m glad I had a barber there to back me up!” We still need 150 more gifts to make our campaign goal. Give today at mlkchgives.org.

  • SHINE BRIGHT: Laureen Dozier was born and raised in South LA. She’s worked many places during her career, but says MLKCH has a different heart. “This facility gives a light to this community to know that there’s somebody here that will take care of us with their whole heart. It’s more than giving a person medicine. From the time that you walk through the door you feel welcome. From our security staff…even our administrators. They’re welcoming. We’re the lighthouse of South Los Angeles.” She supports MLKCH as a Patient Ambassador for our Food & Nutrition Department—and as a member of MLKCH Gives. • OPPORTUNITY: Bruce Snead is an echo tech at MLKCH. How he went from doing construction in his hometown of Carson to working in cardiology is a story about opportunities: recognizing them when they appeared and accepting them with his whole heart. His journey to being on the leadership team of MLKCH Gives is similar and starts with some wisdom from his father: “My dad always said that if we have the opportunity to help someone else, we should. Don’t always look for something to come back to you. If you can give—that is your blessing. I recognize that being able to give back to my own community is an incredible opportunity and a privilege as well.” Read more of Bruce’s story and join MLKCH Gives: mlkchgives.org

  • MLKCH GIVES: Today is the kick off of our annual employee giving campaign, MLKCH Gives—and we’re inviting you to join us. This year’s theme is "With Gratitude" because our staff plays a vital role in making it possible to change the story of #health in South LA, and for that we are incredibly grateful. It takes true #generosity and #leadership to open your heart to an entire #community—especially one like ours that needs a champion. Our goal this year is to secure 650 staff gifts—will you help us start off strong by giving today? Learn more and give: mlkchgives.org
