The 2024 edition of MILE I weekend is just around the corner — and we cannot wait to have Mitchell Scholars join us at the New England Outdoor Center Inc. in Millinocket for all the stellar outdoor activities and leadership development programming! Thank you, L.L.Bean for, once again, sponsoring the signature event, and helping Mitchell Scholars get a chance to #BeanOutsider atop Katahdin, on the Penobscot River, and on the shore of Millinocket Lake. Hope everyone enjoys this look back at last year’s MILE I weekend! #morethanascholarship

Investing in Maine students--and their communities--with so much more than a scholarship
About us
The Mitchell Institute's mission is to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and achieve a college education. Each year, the Mitchell Institute awards a $10,000 Mitchell Scholarship to at least one graduating senior from every public high school in Maine. Selection is based on academic promise, financial need, and community impact. Since our founding in 1995, the Mitchell Institute has awarded more than $25 million in scholarship, fellowship, and contingency funds to more than 3,600 Scholars and Alumni who hail from every community in Maine. Through nearly three decades of experience and evidence-based research, we know that student success in college depends on more than money. That's why the Mitchell Institute offers Scholars a broad range of wraparound supports and resources during and after college to help them hone leadership skills, find and pursue career exploration opportunities, and develop networks that are vital to finding satisfying and purposeful work. This additional support and guidance during college increases Mitchell Scholars’ chances of attaining a degree, finding meaningful employment in Maine, and strengthening their communities long after college. Today, Scholars and Alumni say that this combination of financial and personal support makes a world of difference for them and their families. Our research on Mitchell Scholars demonstrates that our methods work: While 44% of recent Mitchell Scholars were the first in their families to attend college and 80% came from households earning less than Maine’s median family income, they graduate at a rate 27 percentage points higher than the national average. What's more, over 50% achieved earnings early in their careers that were higher than their entire family household income at the time they applied for the Mitchell Scholarship.

For Deklin Fitzgerald, a 2022 Mitchell Scholar from Oceanside High School and a junior media studies major at the University of Southern Maine, receiving a Mitchell Institute Fellowship made possible an 11-day photographic tour of Ireland this past summer. Where might a Mitchell Institute Fellowship take you? The fall Fellowship application period is open now through midnight, November 1. (This application round is for activities that will take place between December and May of this academic year.) To find out more about how a Mitchell Institute Fellowship (available only to Mitchell Scholars and Alumni) might help you in your pursuit of unpaid or underpaid internships, service learning, and study abroad experiences that offer ongoing personal and professional development, please visit https://lnkd.in/eZravE8i To find out how the trip to Ireland was a series of firsts for Fitzgerald, check out the Exposure picture story featuring his images and reflections.

The Mitchell Institute Fall Fellowships application period is NOW OPEN! Mitchell Institute Fellowships are financial awards of up to $1,500 — over and above the Scholarship — that are available to both current Mitchell Scholars and Alumni for a broad range of activities, such as unpaid or underpaid internships; travel or accommodation costs associated with professional or personal development opportunities (internships, conferences, career-related service projects, study-abroad opportunities, etc.); and professional license fees and examination fees for tests like the LSAT/MCAT/GRE and Praxis. These are just some examples. The Fall Fellowship application period closes at midnight on Nov. 1. Scholars and Alumni — check your email from a message from Andrea with more information and the application link. We’re so proud to have Mitchell Institute Scholarship Director Casey Near (center) invited to join Maine partners in helping high school seniors understand the potential of college scholarships and define their paths to college at the annual Olympia Snowe Women's Leadership Institute Fall Forum today! Pictured with Casey at the day-long event that’s designed to raise the confidence and aspirations of high school girls by helping them develop the skills required to be leaders in their lives, families, careers, and communities, are Daniel Barton (left), Director of USM’s Promise Scholarship Program, and Julie Bourgoin, President of the Worthington Scholarship Foundation. Thanks, Casey, for helping to guide “Olympia’s Leaders” into the next chapters of their education! And thank you, Olympia Snowe Women's Leadership Institute, for inviting representation from the Mitchell Institute!

It’s great to see Lily Bailey, the 2023 Mitchell Scholar from Spruce Mountain High School and sophomore Leadership for Sustainable Development major at Saint Joseph's College, featured in Bold Journey, the online magazine that celebrates “the stories, experiences and insights of our neighbors, friends and peers” as “the most relevant and authentic sources of wisdom.” “I was born with a physical disability,” Lily tells Bold Journey. “For a while, I was ashamed of that, but now I realize it’s the fuel I need to change the world.” Check out the interview to learn how Lily is already making a difference by co-founding the Saint Joseph’s College of Maine Disability Awareness Club with, she says, "the mission of raising awareness for accessibility issues across all Maine academic communities by shining light on all variations of disabilities." https://lnkd.in/e4Vd27Ei
