In 1924, Missouri University of Science and Technology was called the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, its student newspaper had advertisements for 35-cent haircuts, there were 353 students enrolled in fall classes, with 111 of them being freshmen — and the electrical engineering department was officially created.

Francisco (Frank) BENAVIDES, one of PENTA’s founders and Senior Consultant, established a Faculty Excellence Award at Missouri University of Science and Technology, which was awarded to Hongyan Ma. Hongyan Ma is also a Kummar Impact Professor at Missouri S&T and Chief Scientific Officer at Carbon Negative Solutions Inc. I had the incredible honor of participating in the fourth anniversary of the transformative gift by Fred and June Kummer to Missouri S&T. This momentous occasion wasn’t just about celebrating the donation to the university but about reflecting on the profound impact this generous gift has had on our research, innovation, and the future of education at Missouri S&T. Representing the Kummer I&E Doctoral Fellows, I was privileged to deliver an appreciation speech on behalf of the entire fellowship. It was a truly humbling experience to share how this philanthropic act has opened doors for groundbreaking research and entrepreneurial ventures across campus. One of the most exciting highlights for me was the opportunity to showcase my research, titled: “Beyond the Reduction in CO2 Emissions: The Domino Effects of Concrete Recipe Alterations.” This research dives deep into how small changes in concrete composition with SCMs can lead to significant improvements in sustainability and performance—effects that go far beyond just reducing CO2 emissions. What made this day even more special was sharing my experience at a round table with our esteemed Chancellor, Professor Mohammad Dehghani, and Kummer’s daughter and her husband. Their dedication to driving change and inspiring future innovators was truly inspiring. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this day so memorable. In particular, I want to express my deepest appreciation to the Kummer family for their visionary philanthropy and unwavering support, Rachel Kohman Ed.D., and Jaqueline Meinecke for their dedication to achieving the purpose of this gift. Their commitment ensures that Missouri S&T remains a beacon of innovation, creativity, and impact.
