We recently celebrated another Coat of Excellence ceremony, honoring Dr. Phil Bushby for his dedicated work in shelter medicine. This recognition, presented by Mayor Lynn Spruill, highlights Dr. Bushby’s incredible contributions, including a spay/neuter program that serves shelters throughout our state. Often called the “Father of Shelter Medicine,” Dr. Bushby has created invaluable opportunities for our students, enabling them to graduate with an average of 104 surgeries. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Bushby for his impact and to Mayor Spruill for her ongoing support.

Dr. Mirae Cade Wood, this year's Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Fellow, is a board-certified small animal surgeon based in Franklin, TN. She provides specialized relief services to veterinary hospitals across the southeastern U.S., where she performs diagnostics and complex surgeries for cases like soft tissue injuries, cancer, orthopedic injuries, and neurological issues. Raised in Kosciusko, MS, Dr. Wood initially considered human medicine but chose veterinary medicine, driven by her love for animals and fascination with anatomy. Her accolades include the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association Companion Animal Award and teaching awards from the University of Missouri. Alongside her clinical work, she mentors interns and residents and participates actively in veterinary societies.

Dr. Tyler Jumper, a veterinarian at Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, is pursuing a master's in population medicine with a focus on developing a diagnostic test for trichomoniasis in bulls, which could significantly impact the beef cattle industry. This research aims to provide veterinarians with a more accessible transport media to prevent unnecessary calf losses and support the livestock industry across the United States.

Sarah Thurman, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student at Mississippi State University (MSU), attributes her passion for animals to a tour of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). She chose MSU for its competitive program and strong graduate outcomes. Thurman, from Greenwood, South Carolina, earned her bachelor's in animal and dairy science from MSU in 2022, a year early, thanks to dual credit courses in high school. Her practical experience includes work at a small-animal clinic, internships at the Greenville Zoo and Mississippi Aquarium, where she discovered her interest in aquatic medicine. This led her to research stranded sea turtles through MSU’s Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Health Program. Thurman encourages vet students to explore research, as it plays a crucial role in advancing animal health. To read more about Sarah, click the link! https://lnkd.in/dFWiE2xa

The Baldwins have generously contributed to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine's Veterinary Medical Technology Program, providing funding for a scholarship aimed at supporting a student in need. Their motivation comes from a deep appreciation for the essential role that veterinary medical technologists play in animal care. Over the past two years, they have made numerous visits to their local vet and the AHC, understand firsthand the significant impact a skilled and compassionate vet tech can have. Transforming a difficult and heartbreaking time into one filled with love, patience, and kindness is truly a remarkable gift.
